captainsblog: (Uhura)
Got my computer back this afternoon:)  It has a New new hard drive, not to be confused with the Old new hard drive the other guru put in, which apparently lasted all of three weeks before having serious shits. Even better this time, all my data, proggies and such migrated right onto it, with a new improved version of my email program which is working just duckily.

Everything's re-uptodated on here now except for syncing the phone. I refuse to let Apple ruin my mojo at this hour.

The XP machine which had been my salvation for the past week slowed to a crawl this morning when I asked it to send email, print a .pdf and keep my usual dozen Firefox windows open all at once. It's now been put out to pasture (aka the rickety old chair next to the bookcase in my office) for a few occasional XP-only apps I still use, and with my thanks for getting me through this latest ordeal with minimal pain.

One of the last things I did the other night was send the draft of a Sunday bulletin to our former associate pastor, who I will be subbing for at his much smaller church in a two-towns-over suburb this coming Sunday.  The assigned text is the portion of the Sermon on the Mount that is pure unadulterated socialism- "if someone asks for your shirt, give them your coat as well." My intended approach to this is to take the typical conservative ignore-ance of this precept, which preaches rugged individualism and an I Me Mine philosophy known as "prosperity gospel," and to kick it in its hypocritical teeth.  My title, now cast in typeface? "Live eternally and prosper."

I will be explaining this in the immediately preceding childrens sermon using a model of the USS Enterprise. Hopefully with live phasers to keep the rednecks in the congregation from stoning me during or after my message.

Vinny and his GF/generally awesome cook-and-bottlewasher were the absolute bomb during the whole reinstall process. They invoiced me for far too little and, so far, have been paid only in soup. I'd stopped right after court, and before picking up my laptop, at a longtime fixture on Rochester's Park Avenue called Nathan's, and in addition to my own lunch, asked if they could pick out a good sample of their wares for some very deserving and hungry computer types. Moments later, a quart of cream of chicken, with broccoli, mushroom and linguine, was working its way out to the Ridge where my baby awaited me. They were gracious and grateful in their thanks for the effort, and I encourage any of you who ever get to Rachacha to check out this 30-plus-year institution in the culinary neighborhood. They've just opened a satellite at RIT, and both their people and Emily have told me how they're going like gangbusters there.

Seminar tomorrow. Revised New York exemption laws. Be still your beating hearts.
