Now that my annual mob-soccer game of mid-May birthdays is past (yes, I know there are some in the 20s of the month, I'm not there yet;), I thought I'd switch gears for a bit. Since I have no idea if these overhyped, too-clever-by-half birthday postings of mine even get read, I'm going to go off the board and extend wishes which have, at best, a 1-in-365 chance of even being relevant.

We met off a random posting on a FriendsFriends page; she knew the answer to Some Burning Question I'd put out there and was kind enough to answer it. Since then, her own near-daily posts, and her not-as-frequent but always-appreciated replies to mine, have been a joy. Probably a blue jean baby, definitely an L.A. lady, she has a knack for covering a range of pop-culture stuff without it being overwhelming in quantity or annoying in scope. Many of the things I repeat here, came from there. All of it with just enough of her own words, and emotions, to make it independently interesting.

Despite all that, other than knowing her city of residence and year of birth, I know little about Teh Grrl. Never seen a picture, no idea when her birthday is, don't even know her name.

But so what?

I thank you for all your thoughtfulness, and wish a Happy Designated Birthday, to [livejournal.com profile] shadowhuntress:)

As Eleanor posted last night, with a good deal of excitement, we have new tenants here: a nesting pair of Baltimore orioles, who've been trying to get at the nectar in our hummingbird feeder.  She hadn't seen one since childhood. I don't think I ever saw one that wasn't on a baseball cap.

Until about 12 hours ago. Sitting in the living room this morning, semi-catatonic while my coffee was brewing, I was scanning a New Yorker article and, in a chance moment, looked up directly into the line of sight to the feeder in the front yard, where Cal, as of course he's now known, was back on the perch trying to chow down.

I ran to grab my phone and see if Eleanor was awake, but just as I headed to take the shot, one of the dogs let out one of their trademark BAM-BAM-LEMME-IN-BAM-BAM noises at the back door and shooed the little guy away.

Needless to say, there's been some procurement done. A feeder that's big enough for their beaks, and special orangey nectar for the n00bs, are now out next to where the hummingbird feeder is. I just hope that a bunch of big brute birds wearing red socks and pinstripes don't start showing up three and four days at a time to kick their asses.
