Somehow, neither of those is a Sabres reference, but the decompression is not going especially well this year:(

I saw one of those things this morning that makes you go,  the huh?!? My 9:30 a.m. pre-trial got postponed to this afternoon at, oh, just about 9:31, as I was parking the car in front of the courthouse. My next appearance of the day wasn't for over another hour, so with penalties time suddenly needing to be killed, I took the moment to run a deposit over to the nearest HSBC Arena branch (stop that!).

Officially, this branch in downtown Rochester is still the home to my personal checking account with them, and I'd been doing assorted law firm business in there for more than two decades prior to today's visit. Yet I'd never noticed, until today, an unusual sight as I exited the branch with my receipt in hand: a multicolored height chart on the frame of the exit door.

Only outside, and a block away, did I figure it out. Between mergers of banks and cutbacks in the downtown population, there are now maybe ten bank branches in the Rochester central business district, way down from the several dozen there were when I began practicing there. Urban life being what it is, the city branches attract more than their share of stupid robbery attempts, and with the number of available vaults cut down so much, it's likely this branch is a relatively regular target.

The height chart? It's hanging there, no doubt, to assist the tellers in sizing up the bandit on his (or, with increasing frequency, her) way out the door. All it was lacking was one of those Rat World signs with an arrow pointing to 48 inches and a graphic of Mickey saying

YOU MUST BE THIS TALL TO ROB.

----

Today's birthday girl would barely be allowed to rob the bank. At least going on outside measurements.

Yet if you could put charts around her for her heart, her sensitivity, her often selfless spirit or the quality or quantity of her passions in life, she'd climb those charts and blow them to smithereens.

She was one of the first people I touched toes with in the water here to call "friend," and she's never moved from the top of that chart, either.

It's taken her a whole year, but we can finally call her thirty-something. Something pretty damn wonderful, if you ask me (or just about anyone else).
