Shabbat Slalom.
Mar. 12th, 2014 08:49 pmAs blizzards go, this one was pretty wussy. Most schools (even UB here, and RIT) closed before the storm reached its peak. All significant government offices and courts went along, as did many businesses. As a result, the roads and parking lots that I experienced were clear of the worst of idiocy, getting me home before 11 a.m. in sunlight and safety.
It's been a good day, even as the totals piling outside our doors and windows haven't come close to approaching the 14-18 inches promised for the event. (Our unofficial snow gauge atop our driveway-adjacent lamppost is maybe a third of that, and even if you discount blowoff from the winds, we're still okay.)
I've nearly finished a 900-page marathon of a novel I've been slogging through at the gym for close to two weeks. Eleanor has made headway on getting her new laptop set up. Jazz.fm has been on for most of the afternoon and evening, serenading it all. Midafternoon featured a battle of jazzy old tv theme songs, including Johnny Mandel's theme from M*A*S*H and Bob James's theme from Taxi. (We've no idea who won.)
Tomorrow is predicted to be a back-to-normal day, and by the weekend, the projected temps in the 40s will likely melt away the whole memory of this experience. It's been nice, while it's lasted.
