The term was introduced to baseball scorecards by longtime Yankee broadcaster Phil Rizzuto:

He was usually too busy writing poetry for such marginal tasks as paying attention.

Scooter comes to mind because I also Wasn't Watching the moment last night that hopefully will NOT become Buffalo's defining moment for 2023.

Bills-Bengals was scheduled all along for Monday Night Football, and began a little later this year due to the Rose Bowl earlier in the day. We were finishing another component of our recent Anton Yelchin Film Festival, on Peasuck (so named because it wouldn't start on the tv until I goosed the ads you had to watch first by Wasn't Watching them on this laptop). Yelchin is only in one of the segments of New York, I Love You, part of a series of metrophilic films that began with Paris, je t'aime. In them, actors and directors are given a neighborhood and a strict time limit to come up with something conveying love of something/one in that setting. Yelchin's short segment places him with James Caan playing a father and Olivia Thirbly playing a disabled girl who he takes to prom.

By the time that was over and Eleanor had retired after a very long day (up on a roof and with more stories about said roof I will get to probably later), I decided to let the game play out while I W.W.  Usually I'll hear cheers from the outdoor tailgaters on several sides of us if something good is happening. My one concession was checking the score right before turning the lights out- Bengals up 7-3 early in the game- and one post from a Bills fan friend:

Player down....

That didn't seem all that unusual, so I headed into the arms of Morpheus. Four or so hours later, I found out why the outside had been so silent and why it was hard to find a final score: there wasn't one.

This morning, I did watch that moment. Google "Damar Hamlin hit" if you are so inclined or if you haven't already seen it 9,000 times on ESPN or even CBS News.  It didn't seem that much of a hit. He got up from it, but promptly fell back down. The ref next to him immediately stopped play.  Next image I saw was of an ambulance on the Cincinnati field.  What I didn't see was the CPR being administered. That's the part that set this apart from the Dane Jackson hit on the Bills home field earlier in the season, or the Kevin Everett hit that ended his career back in 2007. Neither lost consciousness or heartbeat.  Jackson is back on the field already; Everett's ended his career but not his life or, eventually, his mobility.

This was not what we needed here:

Buffalo: “Boy, 2022 was hard on us! Thirteen Seconds, May 16th, 7 feet of snow in November and a blizzard to end the year! We’re glad to see you go!”

2023: “Hold my beer.”

Reports have been made, and officially denied, that teams were told to "get ready in five minutes." That, blessedly, did not happen. All except Hamlin have returned home, and fans were kept out of the airport from offering greetings that, on any other occasion win or lose, would have happened in the middle of the night and would have been appreciated by the players.  Nothing has been said about rescheduling, which is also a blessing. If I were the Commissioner of Common Sense, I'd let the final week of the season play out next Sunday and only replay that game if it would have some effect on seedings (both teams are already in the playoffs).

Come back tomorrow to see if 2023 improves its damn attitude.

I saw the news last night and thought of messaging you. Just checked CNN and there seems to be no change. I do hope he pulls out of it. He seems to be a thoroughly nice guy.

I'd like to put forward the movie 5 to 7 for your marathon. (It also has Olivia Thirlby in a prominent role.) I saw this one soon after Like Crazy, so can be forgiven for thinking it started off a bit stiff--that's just what happens when you go from unscripted back to scripted. But it loosens up quickly. :)
