Well, Tanya Roberts gave us a scare, but I guess she's gone for a walk....

My first full workday of 2021 is in the books, and it didn't get sent to the principal's office for bad behaviour. Not much on old work developed, but a bunch of new clients called in from the prepaid plan I participate in; they must have rolled it out as a new benefit for people in the new year, and I now have a couple of wills, a traffic ticket and  I don't even know what the other one is yet.

Our paltry stimmy payment showed up this morning and has just about gone right back out for various bills, since January is always a slow month for regular client payments with property taxes and college tuition payments coming due.  I thought about waiting until the 20th to start making payments against it, out of the habit of wanting to be sure that Trump didn't bounce a check on us.  He's especially suspect now that he spent the weekend having to explain yet another "perfect call" he made to flatter, beg, demand and threaten the freedom of Georgia election officials.  The Senate runoffs are there tomorrow, then the Final Count happens in Congress on Wednesday, and despite all the planned objections and machinations, by the end of the week the suspense should be over and we'll have some sanity restored two weeks after that.

With all the streams available to choose from for entertainment, it's getting hard to keep up and to weed out the good from the bad. We saw a Meryl Streep film had been released on HBO Max called Let Them All Talk-  but despite a good sounding cast, but  we independently concluded that it was basically just an Allen Konigsberg movie without him behind the camera and bailed after barely half an hour.  Setting anything on a cruise ship is so pre-COVID we couldn't relate, Candice Bergen was wasted, and I couldn't figure out who half the people were to each other. So we finished Season 2 of Mrs. Maisel instead. Much more worthwhile material in those 50 minutes, including a fairly faithful recreation of Lenny Bruce appearing on Steve Allen in 1959.

But the news we saw in the midst of all that was Doctor-related: word is out that Jodie Whittaker will be hanging up her rainbow colours at the end of whenever the current season finishes.  There's no talk of ill will on either end of the production- just that she wanted to remain in the realm of the three-series commitment that Eleven and Twelve established before her.  I think if she'd come on board after Matt Smith's mercurial interpretation of the character, the transition to her would have worked better. But Capaldi just brought such a cerebral level to the Doctor. That was Eleanor's main problem with Thirteen's run. I had others- too many companions in a very small box, for one- but I missed having someone who thought as much as they impulsively acted.

There is literal betting in the UK on who will take the role, with veddy serious contenders- Death in Paradise and My Family star Kris Marshall, a he, is odds-on-  and odds-off possibilities including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Eddie Remayne. The parallel universe Doctor Ruth from the last series would be an interesting choice- older and wiser- as would Gillian Anderson, who'd be fun as a Murkin in the role and older, though not as old as that old coot (i.e., my age) Twelve.  Plus the potential for crossover fun! Bring back Mulder for a cameo if not as her Companion! Stick this in a corner of the TARDIS!

Just don't cast Cancer Man as the Master. Not when the Bills have this good a chance of winning the Super Bowl.

Sadly, it appears that reports of Ms. Roberts's death were not exaggerated, but merely premature.
