Tires. Retireds. Tried and failed.
Nov. 21st, 2020 09:52 amThe annual ritual of servicing the fleet is under way. Yesterday, we brought Eleanor's in for an oil change and rotation, which went quickly and at no cost, except she is now getting inundated with messages from both the dealer and Hyundai itself apologizing for breaking her appointment and asking her to reschedule. Uh, wha?
Now I'm next. JARVIS is due for inspection after the end of this month, and even though there's no significant snow in the forecast, it's time to put the winter tires back on, with me likely needing to replace them because they've been through two full winters of regular driving. The replacement summer tires I got in the spring should last a while, though; they have just over 4,000 miles on them when they'd usually have racked up more than twice that in a summer and fall.
Partly because of that discrepancy, I parted ways this week with our auto and home insurer of more than 25 years- who raised our auto premium despite our driving going way down. Rather than going with the Gecko or Flo, I took an offer from a company named Amica, which my family had been with in the 70s and was so selective at the time I couldn't get coverage with them. Our homeowners went down a little but the auto got cut close to half of what it would have been.

On Wednesday, right on schedule, Eleanor got her first Social Security check direct deposited. That's making it easier for her to ask for the occasional day off, including Thanksgiving. We're not having anyone or going anywhere, but to be away from the craziness of the day itself, particularly with the grumbling about the elevated restriction levels here, will itself be something to be thankful for.
Also on Wednesday, I discovered that some naughty h8ckr had gotten hold of one of my credit card numbers- one that I only use it for Amazon purchases online and which hasn’t left my wallet in at least six months. They got a bunch of charges through with a Japanese gaming site a couple weeks ago, then went to town last week with six more, plus another 20 that were finally declined.
You cannot report these things online, so I had to go through a telephonic jungle gym of fun to do so. I needed the full card number and CSV from the back, both of which were totally illegible, but fortunately I keep backups of these things. The unauthorized charges were all gone from my statement when they ran it the next day, and a new card is coming in the mail, but it's still rather disturbing that the only way I found out was checking online to be sure the previous month's payment went through. Our checking account, on the other hand, constantly notifies us of any payment made without the card present, or of any transaction over $100, or any time the balance goes below that amount.

Left one photo off yesterday's post- one I took of something I noticed while taking out this wastebasket yesterday:

Apparently this is a bag from one of Eleanor’s gardening supplies, but when I saw “break up clods” and “magic,” I thought she’d found a spell to get rid of Former President Trump supporters;)
He's still at it, with his claims of Beeg Seekrit Conspeericees to deny him his second of many terms, but somehow even some Republicans are finding their longlost spines. Georgia just certified its results after a hand recount reduced Joe's lead by under 1,000 votes to a mandate of still over 10,000- and despite bringing Michigan legislators to the White House to beg for an overturning of the now-certified result there, its Republican legislators said, um, no thanks, we'll follow the law but while we're here could we have some extra COVID money?
In 60 days, it'll all be over. Then he can start collecting Social Security without his annual salary affecting his benefits.

Date: 2020-11-22 08:08 pm (UTC)made it mandatory. I have my appointment next week. I actually have two
sets of tires, and two sets of rims, so they just swap over the entire
thing, rather than having to remount the tires each time.
