The Heat Wave of July '13 finally broke last night. The skies started to darken soon after we ate outside, and by 9:00, things were starting to get interesting. We had a non-stop natural laser light show for close to four hours; the Internet in the house went out soon after the storm started, and then around 9:30, there were two flickers and then all the power was out....

and stayed that way until at least 1 or 2.  Some are still without, but ours came back on sometime in the wee's, so I did not have to make a Wegmans run for bags of ice at 5 a.m.

After feeding time for the aminals, I got a bit more sleep, cleaned the kitchen, checked a backlog of work email, and then packed up for a Morning Out.  Following a 10:00 workout, I'd scheduled the replacement of my car windshield, done in by some sort of falling object sometime in June.  It's fully covered! Yay!, but I'd have to leave it there for close to two hours while the new glass cured.

No problem- there's another Wegmans about a quarter mile down the road from the place, so I just took this computer and some stuff to work on, and after dropping the car off, headed out in the not-quite-finished rain.

Blech.  But okay.  Could've been worse; our friend elbiesee blogged this morning about her own fun times with Safelite- only hers coming after her car's windshield completely shattered. While driving it.  Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and she's under repair, but I consoled myself that my annoying little crack could have been a lot worse.

And, unfortunately, now is:P

----

Barely halfway into a sammich in the Wegmans cafe section, this puter happily plugged in and wifi'd so I could work for the duration, Glass Lady appeared out of nowhere at my table.  I'd told her I'd be there; I also told her I didn't have my phone, which I (a) forgot and (b) didn't bother to go back for since it was (c) dead from the (d) lack of power all night to recharge it.

This couldn't be good.

Turns out, they have to remove the wipers in order to remove the existing glass- and, in the process of trying to socket-wrench those puppies out of their assembly, the nut holding down the passenger-side wiper to its motor snapped nicely in half.  They can't repair the window until I get it fixed- since in its present condition, the wiper still works, but if they removed the rest of the nut, it would fly off the first time I turned it on- which, at the moment, is happening a lot.

Worse still, I can't arrange that repair until Monday, if then, since my mechanic closes on Saturdays about five minutes before GL appeared at my table.  Also, there's likely to be a bit of a tiff about this: I don't mind attending to the repair, even to advancing the funds for it, but I suspect this may require more than just a nut job (trust me- I know all about nut jobs;) and if it goes even into high double figures, I'm going to expect them, or my insurance company, to cover it. They, in turn, will likely tell me that it was just a worn-out part and it's my responsibility.  So, yeah- Insurance Wars.

Part of me wants to just blow the whole thing off- the crack is outside my field of vision, and really won't be a problem until March, when I have to get the car inspected next. We might be rid of it by then. So we'll have to see how this goes early next week.  I'll try to look on the bright side of life, but hopefully it won't get too badly refracted through the crack:P

Point of order:

It was my driver's side window, but yeah. Still scary. And ugly.

And now I'm paranoid about the other five windows.
