At my desk all day. How novel.
Apr. 27th, 2016 07:13 pmToday was the first of two this week with no court; I have an outside Thing or two at the end of the day which I probably will do, but I don't have to. The only other commitment is a conference call from a court in a few minutes.
::waits, takes call::
I am taking on a case I originally leaned toward turning down, since it comes from a prepaid legal plan which does not pay very much for the particular service in question. Then I got into the detail of it: one of the larger law firms in this town (and other upstate ones) is foreclosing on a homeowner on behalf of their condo association. The original amount in dispute was a bit over $3,000, which the homeowner paid, and then overpaid by thousands to be sure it was all caught up. This law firm billed more than $7,500 for beginning a foreclosure last year, and has now begun a new one because nobody ever sent a bill for any of that time. The condo by-laws do allow for "reasonable" attorneys fees, but I've yet to meet the person who thinks that number is reasonable. I have an angry letter which I'm sleeping on before sending to the law firm. There are at least three ways I can be compensated far in excess of what the prepaid plan provides, but unlike some lawyers, I don't give a shit if I get paid it or not. I just want to see this homeowner's situation made right

I also made progress on a major (for me) case that will come to a head on Monday if I can't encourage supposedly reasonable people to be reasonable. I also also took steps toward streamlining getting more work from the same prepaid legal plan.

Turns out I did attempt one of the outside Things around 4:00, with no luck- but I did make a Tarjay run, where a copy of The Force Awakens jumped out and lightsabre'd me in Aisle 20. I saw it with the kids when it came out, but Eleanor hasn't. We'll start it later:)
