Connections and Buckets and Just Doing.

captainsblogAfter a very early rising this morning for court and other errands, I ran into an old law school friend by the courthouse elevators. Hadn't seen her in years, but she's in the same old place just across the street from the Rochester Hall of Justice, so I stopped over there to catch up after I got out of my hearing.
We shared family pictures and stories of people we'd known back then, and somehow, she wound up quoting Kinky Friedman. Hey! I finally saw him perform two summers ago! (Wot I did, you know.) When I got back to my office, I emailed her that link with the pictures of the Kinkstah and of the autograph I got from him, and her near-awe about the experience reminded me how glad I was that I'd taken that plunge.
Well, here comes another one.

Bruce Springsteen is here tonight. There were assorted ooh's and ahh's about it on the radio during my morning drive in, even on NPR. I gave brief thought to just driving down to the arena after work tonight, to see if some of the last-minute scalpers were turning to desperation; that often happens with these high-profile shows that the ticket bots steal all the good seats to. Alas, it's snowing sideways, and I've been up since before 5 a.m. with plenty of driving and stressing in between. So I abandoned hope, but as often happens, it didn't abandon me.
A Rochester friend posted this afternoon- he's got a singleton, not for the one here tonight, but for the Boss's next show in two nights, at the Rochester War Memorial. Lower bowl- not sure how far up. I'm waiting for him to confirm- he's a Bruce groupie of sorts and is coming here for tonight's show, as well- butI'm pretty sure he just contacted me- it's mine.
Bruce is one of the few I've always wanted to cross off the Bucket List. He was playing Cornell even before Born to Run and was there at least twice in my undergrad days. He's been here any number of times, all indoors at either the Aud or its successor Your Bank Name Here Arena. Every one, I managed to miss. The timing was wrong, the finances were short, the big case was the next day. (You don't make plans for the day after a Springsteen show.)
This is a Saturday night, in a smaller venue, with nothing to get up for Sunday except possibly the church where we were married. Because it's just the one ducat, I can't bring the kids, or have Eleanor join me. She's not much for this kind of thing anyway even if it was local. I think she understands how it's still something I get a big charge out of, every rarity and again.
If it happens, I really can't think of any others that are abso-Bucket-lutely necessary. I have some smaller ones I'd consider more Mason Jar List acts- no less loved, but infinitely easier- including 10,000 Maniacs (who I've completely missed, Natalie-attired or otherwise, in the 30-plus years since they began less than an hour from here), Indigo Girls, Weird Al (Labor Day weekend in Canandaigua if I get brave). Oh, and speaking of Brave, Sara Bareilles- Indoors this time. All of us.
But as for the Big List performances: Billy Joel came off the list last year; Simon and Garfunkel were a decade ago; and three-quarters of the original Who go back with me to 1982, their first supposed farewell tour. Also, the Clash (twice, including at that same 1982 show), the Ramones, and of course the Kinkstah.
My bucket runneth over.

Date: 2016-02-26 02:07 pm (UTC)I finally saw him two summers ago and it was everything I wanted it to be (except that he did not play Thunder Road, which has been my favorite since the first moment I heard it.) It was raucous and joyful and spectacular.
