First, some updates of things posted here previously, in no particular order:

* Pocket, the pittie rescue being fostered by Massachusetts LJ friends, is doing great:)  She's gone from almost rodent size at the time of her break-the-Internet debut-

- to more than twice the size and tons more love, as seen on her unofficial Facebook page-

How can you not just slobber all over her?

* Too soon to know if Zoey's getting over her ear problem, but the meds and the new (which is to say old) cat fud are going nicely:)

* Mixed news on the fighting-the-insurance-idiocy front. Earlier this week, Eleanor got promising word- that it may have just been a fixable problem of resubmitting the three lab test bills to Blue Cross with a corrected code, which would be great. Not-so-great is that when I checked today to see if that had happened, I discovered that they'd declined the fourth (and, fortunately, final) of the tests and as of this moment we now have four almost-$600-each bills out there, more than our health account has in it.  I'm still optimistic that this will get fixed, though. Meanwhile, my own premium is only going up by about 10 bucks a month in 2015, so Obamacare is not the scary bear it's made out to be, at least for us.

* Most recently in the past, word came late today that the Rochester football factory did file a lawsuit to force its way into the high school playoff game it had been forfeited out of due to using an ineligible player- and the judge denied their petition. A well-written and well-reasoned decision, done on only a few days' notice; fortunately, the Catholics have declined further appeal.

----

That brings (also, rings) us to the present- the doorbell's been relatively busy this Halloween compared to some years. Not surprisingly, a large number of Elsas have shown up, inspiring this reaction from the New Yorker-

----

Finally, I see the near future....

* Emily will be home this weekend, for the first time since July. Her boss needs her to deliver some work stuff to Brockport on Monday, and is paying her gas money that far, so she's going to a friend's birthday party tomorrow night and will be around with us Sunday.

* Tomorrow, I will mostly finish settling a case that's taken me the better part of four years to resolve.

* Next week, workwise, promises to be a bear: I have to be in two places at once (30 miles and an hour apart Tuesday, 70 miles and 15 minutes apart Friday), and am still trying to find the time-turner in my drawer that will enable THAT to be pulled off.

* I also got word of a major shitstorm coming down in a case, possibly as soon as early next week, so that will be fun.

In between, there will be voting, and recognitions of a number of birthdays (including mine #hint), the penultimate pre-Christmas Doctor; and, of course, there will be sport.

::hugs:: I'll be pinging around the Atlantic for your birthday, I think (and I envy your travel schedule) so I'll say 'Happy Birthday!' now. :) Would you like something from Rome? (Not sure I'll have time to shop for anything in Laredo, though it's a bit less insane of a schedule than Cape Town).

I guess some plenary indulgences would be nice if the Pope's got them on sale this month;)

And be careful crossing the border from Laredo into the rest of Texas. I hear it's almost as crazy as Austin.

I'll do my best. :)

Oh yeah. I checked Laredo's crime stats and various lifestyle indicators & it looks pretty safe (I'm keeping my tattoos covered for the interview, though, JIC) and I've a friend doing a PhD at UT Austin who loves it there (she's from India originally), but apart from maybe visiting friends in SAT I'll be careful in the rest of the state.
