Four days after being recognized for completing her degree requirements, Emily found out that she completed her degree requirements. And then some.

First came word about her thesis film grade. She was sure she'd passed, but not by how much.

"Would you believe this much" for 800, Alex?

That was- IS- such an affirmation of the good work she did, the effort she put in, and the respect of her instructors that she deserved.  All that remained was for the final two grades to come in- a satisfactory gym grade and a B in Drawing for Animation previously had. And did they?




I got to call her just now to tell her- "SWEETHEART! YOU GOT AN A IN DYING!"

We think she wound up 0.025 short of a cum laude designation on her degree, although there's some discretion with the dean and I wouldn't be shocked to see it there. But even if it isn't, it's the culmination of a laudable career and bodes incredibly well for the road ahead:)

FNRT-384 Art of Dying
This course explores the experience of dying as a profoundly human and universal experience as it is represented by artists who are themselves facing immanent death. The unique and deeply personal process of each dying artist is crucially informed by social, cultural and historical as well as artistic contexts. The course will focus primarily on visual artists and writers living with and dying of disease—such as AIDS, cancer and cystic fibrosis as well
as mortality and age. Topics such as aesthetics, artistic media, representation, grief, bereavement, illness, care-giving, aging, and the dying process willbe considered within the context of issues of race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, gender and community values. Some of the artists covered will be Jo Spence, Hannah Wilke, Elias Canetti, Bob Flanagan, Herve Guibert, Tom Joslin, Laurie Lynd, Audre Lorde, Charlotte Salomon, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, Bas Jan
Ader, Ted Rosenthal, Felix Gonzalez Torres, Keith Haring, Eric Steel, Derek Jarman, Eric Michaels, and David Wojnarowicz. We will also explore some of the critical theory of Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Elaine Scarry, Susan Sontag, and Ross Chambers. Class 3, Credit 3 (S)

John Brunner was unusually prescient. Stand on Zanzibar was written in 1968, updating the fragmented style used by John Dos Passos with the theories of Marshall McLuhan. Highly recommended if you haven't already read it, along with the other three novels in this stylistic quartet, Jagged Orbit, The Sheep Look Up, and Shockwave Rider.

Still, I can see where this would be an important subject to a creative artist.

That looks like an amazing class-- I've read most of the theory listed and have been looking at the aesthetics of medical drama (and death/injury/body horror). I'm really quite jealous!

All is well! Sooner or later I'll get around to actually posting something again...work is eating my brain in the best possible way, and I've spent so much time trying to explain that to people that I may as well actually post about it. :)
