As many friends have remembered today, 10/27/86 was the last time the Mets have won the World Series.  We bit our nails two nights earlier, during the far more stressful Game Six, but that merely tied things, before a rainout and a final push got us there on this night, 26 years ago.

Our marriage is younger. Our animal companionship history is younger. Our daughter is younger. But that moment, spent in a not-yet-owned Rochester condo that was, by then, more-or-less our first marital home, still seems like it happened last night. I had the TV on NBC, but the sound turned down and an amalgam of speaker wire and prayer to bring in that call linked above by forever Mets broadcaster Bob Murphy. "The dream has come true," he said, and it had- for those of us who knew nothing about what it meant to be the favorite in a contest. We'd had to work our way back to underdogdom in order to make things right, and, for the last time in our team's now half century of history, we did.

----

Seventy years before that, on 10/27/16, a life grew in Brooklyn.

My mother came from a broken home, never achieved even a high school education, and spent most of her adult life in subjugation to her husband and to society's expectations of her.  Yet she managed to raise three caring and creative kids; was at the center of the life of a church to an extent I've yet to manage; and never failed to be kind to anyone and everyone who crossed paths with her.

She outlived the last Mets championship, long enough to be a part of her two youngest kids' weddings- including ours:

Happy 96th Birthday, Mom:)
