captainsblog: (I Voted)

It's 30 days until elections in the US.  The decisions made by the body politic that day will affect the direction of this nation for years to come.

It will be the 35th general election I'll have voted in, all but one year when a college-townie Board of Elections wouldn't accept a dorm address for me. I intend to make the most of it. I also picked up Monroe County registration forms for both Emily and Cameron and delivered them to them to fill out and send in. This week, I will ensure they did so, tapping my foot and providing the stamps if necessary.

Money can buy influence- and this year, it has far more than in any other- but it cannot buy additional actual ballots- yet. I wouldn't be surprised if Mittens proposes cumulative voting for future elections, which is how big shareholders in corporations manage to increase their influence over election of directors far beyond one-share-one-vote.

In most states, there's still time to register- and in at least some, you can already early-vote. Do it now before you forget, or before your government manages to forget you.
