Wife's sick. Kid's sick. But I'm feeling better- at least until the reviews come in.
The
yuletide deadline was 8:00 tonight. So naturally, I sat down to write at something close to 3 this afternoon, almost entirely from scratch. It only had to be 1,000 words, and in a fandom I didn't know all that well (but an offshoot of one I do know and love quite well), so I never lost confidence in its do-ability.
Then again, I had no idea where the story would take me. And, oh, the places it went! I was surprised, and pleased; it may not be what the requester had in mind, but when they hear the backstory to how their request jelled with my consciousness of some recent and local events, I don't think they'll mind. It hit the archive a minute or two past 7, and it's now in YuLimbo until Sunday, when it becomes my giftee's gift (and I receive mine own, which should be one of these three: Galaxy Quest, Community (never seen it; Emily pinch-hit that request for me), or Slings & Arrows.)
If you're writing for me on any of those three (pinch or otherwise) and have been looking for my Dear Author post, this is it. Let me make it simple: Write anybody. Do anything. I'll appreciate whatever you do, and will thank you immensely for it:)

Not long before that effort started, MSN3K finished, at least through its submit-to-publisher draft. My biggest problem with this project has always been hitting a designated word count; the initial outliney draft was just over 4,300 words, the second pre-beta expanded to a bit beyond 6,400, and the just-submitted/beta'd/expanded one is 10,000 and small change. It should be longer, but I've literally spent weeks trying to fit an X peg into a Y hole, lengthwise, while still maintaining its overall tone, structure and integrity.
There may be ideas, edits and artifices that will get it into bigger shape, but I've submitted it as best as I think it can be.

With all that happening, the one thing I barely did today was practice law. Maybe a bit of that tomorrow. Along with visiting our neighbor at DeGraff, cleaning up some finances, and figuring out who's doing what on Christmas Eve.
