Those of you on the deprived side of the Hudson are about to get some relief, as Wegmans opens its first New England store in Northborough, Mass. tomorrow.  The boyz already operating on those streets are not taking this news lightly, though. They've just announced this major dissing of the 2-Weg Crew:

A Trader Joe's store is slated to open in Pittsford next year, Wilmorite Inc. officials announced Thursday. It would be the first Trader Joe's in Upstate New York.

The planned 14,000-square-foot store will be located in Pittsford Plaza on Monroe Avenue, plaza officials said.

That's not just any random location. It's the same shopping plaza as the Wegmans chain's flagship store, home to its only store-run full-service restaurant and the only liquor store it can legally own in New York State (technically not part of the chain, but they use the store logo and the same "$6 wine" promotions as they do for their "$6 meals").

It's on. I can see a full-blown gang war erupting out of this diss. Think of the horrors:  drive-by demiglacings, taggings on the sides of the Lexus SUVs, and of course D-Weg doing his own trash-talk rappin':

I went to Trader Joes and the lines were so long
They usin online sockpuppets and you know that's just wrong
Messin' with our home market cause their stock price ain't rallyin'
They better watch out for my crew- this month they're all Italian!
Pullin this stunt movin near us, doin it just for the pub
We're gonna bust Joe in the trunk with a heavy Shoppers Club

I am SO sorry. It's Wegmans. He wouldn't rap. It'd be a panini.

Too bad there's no way for me to try out this Wegman's. It would be nice to have one convenient to public transportation here in Boston.

I had never been to a Wegman's - or indeed heard of the place until I knew you both - and I always loved Trader Joe's. I think I need to educate myself somehow.

All's I can say is, if you get one before the majority of the Northeast USA does, you're gonna have some pretty peeyoed people on your hands.

Or, rather, we will;)

I wouldn't say that mass-transit friendly sites are in or out of their business model, but: their hometown city has given them the most grief over the years about expanding or relocating their stores within city limits. As a result, they've effectively given up on Rochester proper, except for one that they're renovating now despite opposition from NIMBY neighbors who don't want "a suburban store" on their corner. They essentially wanted Wegmans to turn their second-to-last city store into a TARDIS, providing a full-service store on a way-too-small footprint, rather than move a few blocks away to a site that didn't fit the "Master Plan." And? Now the old site is a U of R parking lot and there STILL isn't anything, masterplanned or otherwise, on the spot the store wanted to move to.
