Ghouls Gone Wild
Sep. 22nd, 2011 06:57 pmLate day afternoon. Finished making the bank deposit, and was waiting to turn right onto Sheridan to go to post office and gym.
Not one, not two, but all three network affiliate news trucks were setting up their Live Eye mobile units in the parking lot to my right. I wondered for what: I saw no fire, heard no sirens, no evidence of Pistol Packin' Punks.
Then it clicked. Kittycorner from their mobile command perch is Amherst's most famed funeral home, with orange-vested APD cops already starting to direct traffic. Sure enough, Jamey Rodemeyer's calling hours are tonight. He was the young man I referenced yesterday.
Really, guys? Your stations' programming did a lot to infiltrate and poison the wells of the young and stupid lives that drove this poor young man to his own death. You celebrate Snooki, not Freaks and Geeks. Your so-called "reality" programming turns everything into an everyone-for-themselves competition driven, not by who's the most deserving of winning, but by who gets kicked out first. And you have lent far too much credence to these myopic, if not mentally blind, political movements that think Jesus rode dinosaurs with Fred Flintstone 6,000 years ago and that being a good Christian means you have to deny or "pray away" your own sexuality if you "choose" to be that way.
I refuse to watch your pandering pans of the grieving families, or the victim's friends-come-lately who think it's ohhh so tragic now that they're actually paying attention. Now if you want to cover something, make it the DA's press conference where, I pray, he will announce the indictments, as adults, of the mean girls and boys whose causation is all over this tragedy. Even if they wind up with just probation and community service like the killers of Phoebe Prince did, at least the little monsters will get their names forever shamed on Wikipedia and might even- shudder!- not get into the top universities of their choice, stuck in Bully Hell with the unpopular, undeserving and underdogs they made fun of all their lives.
And now, sports.

Date: 2011-09-24 01:33 am (UTC)I, too, hope this kids are called out, prosecuted, and punished. While the did not hold a gun to his head, they gave him the bullets day after day. God bless his family. As the words of Sarah, "In the arms of the Angel, may you find some comfort here."
