I could've sworn we had Starz, but we don't. We do have Teh Technology, though, so I sat down yesterday afternoon to check out what RTD had done with my beautiful bride-in-my-own-mind in the season premiere of Torchwood.
I'll save the real spoilers for the end, but I had trouble believing that this CIA chick was my dear Claire. Tentative rather than tenacious. Her voice- just not right somehow. And blonde. What was with THAT? Worse, poured into a form-fitting business suit with fuck-me heels. Worse still, pulling the standard Action Series Fallacy by running away in said FM's. Worst of all, running away from Jack. You don't run away from Jack! You signed on to this show to be with Jack! He's got a Kevin Bacon number of 1 with the freakin' Doctor! (Not to mention a Kevin Bacon number of 2 with Kevin Bacon!)
But then things started getting REALLY confusing. A few minutes later, she returns to her CIA post, answers the phone and for the first time I hear her referred to by name. That's not the name of Lauren's character- whatwith? IMDB-clicky-clicky, and.... that's not Claire. She's not even IN this episode.
I do, however, now know who she will be appearing with, and for, in the series once she does show up. That would be the Evil McEvilpants played by Bill Pullman, who I almost didn't recognize, either.
All in all, an interesting premise- worth following. I don't think I need to get into the backstory all that much to understand what's going on, but in general, it reminded me more of an X-Files episode than anything resembling Doctor Who.
This-all's a LOT more graphic in terms of death and bodyparts than I'm normally exposed to. The opening scene was extremely rough, the one with the mostly-melted skeleton, even more so.
And what was with all the bad guys shooting at, and trying to blow up, everybody in sight once the premise had already been established that THEY CAN'T DIE?
Did anyone else have any doubt that the tourists on the beach were not tourists on the beach? Didn't fool me for a second, and I just got here.
I loved the use of the TV talking heads to help spread the story, and the public reaction to it. On the weekend that the real News of the World was forced to fold, it was fun to watch the Beeb making fun of Rupert Murdoch's unique, um, contribution to the formerly honoured profession of journalism.
From here, though, I guess I'll just see where it goes. There's enough to hold me, but more than a few things that might fold me, especially if Jilly turns out to be too minor, too annoying, or just too unClairey.
