If, in the coming years, my beloved Mets somehow fall into a sinkhole, or get relocated to Mexico City or whatever, I think I have a new favorite team. And other than the name on the front of their home uni's, I would not have expected this team to be it:



Damn you, New Yorker, you won't let people read the whole piece about this team and its unlikeliest of stars, Sam Fuld. But I will tell you, from reading the article, that the Rays' clubhouse includes quotes on the wall from Albert Camus, Alan Greenspan, and Virgil. (The Roman one, not the Chicago one.) Also, that their entire payroll is roughly equal to what the Yuckees pay annually just to keep A-Rod on their roster.  Fuld is one of only a handful of Jewish ballplayers (not even, technically, because his mother is Catholic), and he plays with a reckless abandon for the game and with a brain in his head way exceeding the usual aw-shucks caliber of baseball stars.  They've beaten out the Yankees regularly in recent years, which is great; the Red Sox, as well, which some here would think is not so great, despite their doing it with both ManRam and Caveman on their roster (the former no longer).  Ideally, MLB will realign them away from their two Northeast powerhouse cousins, so even Kristen can fall in love with the likes of these guys.

I sent Kate the final edits, and Executive Decisions, earlier today, and I am now going to curl up with the Final Final edition to trawl for typos before giving it my final blessing. By sometime next week, I'm guessing, you will be able to buy a Real Copy of this Real Book on Amazon, BN, or wherever you've got gift-cardage kicking around.  I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be saying that:)

Nah, I dig the Rays ok; even in spite of that toolbox Johnny Damnit. They have Casey Kotchman at 1B and I think that kid is GOING PLACES. I wish we would have kept him. I really only HATE the Yankees; the rest of the teams are just kinda "meh" for me.
