Oh no they didn't. Did they? Because by capitulating to The Toupee, Obama accomplished exactly two things, both the complete opposite of what he intended.

First, he gave credence and currency to the whole nutjob argument, which even a good segment of Wingnutistan had dismissed as being too crazy even for them. When the left had damaging goods on Dubya- about his draft dodging and DWI-ing and drugging and dalliances, did HE ever call a press conference to deny or explain? Hell no; his minions put out "how dare you!" declarations and accused the accusers of lying- and the so-called leftwing media ate it alllllll up.

Worse, his "disclosure" will do no more than produce a ton of tin foil for the BirtherNutterBaggers to make into new, and distracting, foil hats for the next six years. Already, I've heard one theorist going on about the typeface on the "r" in Barack and the number 4 and good gods what is Orly gonna come up with to "prove" it a fake? Because if you could fool the Republican governor of Hawaii with your "official" certificate, and go back in time to plant newspaper announcements and, just located, contemporaneous hospital records, who's gonna believe this new fake? Plus it doesn't matter anyway, since you have to be the child of citizens to be a citizen (nutjob citation here is to "natural law," since they don't like that pesky 14th amendment, dontcha know).

So we're now going to get the very sideshow that this announcement was supposedly made to avoid.

Someone just wake me in 2017 when this is finally over, plzkthnx?

The net result is that Donald Trump claims credit and would now like to push some other conspiracy theory. Facepalm.

The best reaction I've seen to all of this is the following quote:

"I would like to see AKC papers for Donald Trump's hair."

Win.

Or as The Dog-ald would say, "You're hired!"

Yep, what you said. I pretty much did a headdesk when I went to Boston.com this morning. I didn't even want to click on the story and then they went ahead and moved the image of the Birth Certificate to the front page. OY.

The Toupee is stumping in NH right now. I'm praying for a natural disaster.

Oh, don't wish for THAT.

If any pieces of that rug got into the ground water, there'd be an even bigger calamity.

Hmmm, point. Well, maybe a tornado can come along and pick him up and carry him away? I wonder where it could drop him...

Ah, dreams.

Sadly, I have to agree. The President just walked right into the spider's parlor. There is no amount of information that will ever convince a dedicated conspiracy theorist.

I've been hair-pulling frustrated with the President on several occasions, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that he made the announcement knowing full well that the crazies would double down. And that the more time the GOP has to spend pandering to the crazies, the less time they'll have to convince the rational folk that they're just playing along with the loons and that they're really the reasonable choice to govern the nation.

That, or it's the same Jedi mind trick that caused the spontaneous implosions among his most dangerous opponents in his Senate and Presidential races.

My thoughts exactly. I just wish mine were worded as cleverly. :)
