Le Fleur Grand
Apr. 23rd, 2011 10:37 amWe've still got problems here with Gods and Meteorologists, as you may have heard. In under 14 hours, it will officially be the last week of April, and we have yet to string together two straight days with both sun and normal temperatures, or even an entire week without the dreaded S-word making an unwanted re-appearance. The trees are bare, the ground is mud, and the only things growing around here are down in Eleanor's seed starters in the cellar.
With one notable exception, that is.
I went to the back door to let out a dog last night, and despite all the drear, it was still light enough to see this remarkable sign of spring coming from our compost pile:
To paraphrase some old sage, it is better to grow a single daffodil than to curse the winterness.
Yes, there it is, among the coffee grounds and avocado skins and other detritus of our lives. All we'd need are some pretentious French actors and we could really tart it up into something majorly artistic-
- or I could turn this into some kind of pre-Easter smarm about the power of the Resurrection under even the worst of seeming surroundings. Yet, whatever your views may be (or not be) on the subjects of Zombie Jesuses or wealth-redistributing rodents, it does serve to remind of one of the most fundamental lessons we all need to learn. Quoting here, not the Bible, but Beth, from one of our favoritest songs of hers:
Life holds on, given the slightest chance.
----
At the other end of the Circle of Life: I think my iPhone is dying.
I took three pictures of that daffodil, or at least I thought I did. The shutter was slow to shut, and in the end only gave me one of the three before I went back out and caught a couple more (and not as good) to choose from.
Last night, the charge indicator refused to indicate after I'd plugged it in for the usual amount of time (although the phone itself did not crap out while using it thereafter, and didn't register the charge overnight, but did after a reboot). Everything is sluggish, the beastie is spontaneously shutting itself off at least once a day, and even the phone function is getting wonky.
It's a 3G, running the 4.0 software (which, I am told, may have been a mistake), and it's well full up right now, with ::goes, checks, screencaps::
I've been hearing adverts from AT&T that I can get a new 3GS for just $49. I presume the 4Gs would be more along the lines of the couple of Benjamins this one cost me close to two years ago.
Any thoughts from current or former 3G users would be welcome. Is the upgrade to the newer one worth it in terms of speed and capacity? I don't use a ton of goofy apps; I need a phone; want, in order, a music player, email reader and contact/calendar holder; and wouldn't mind some extra apps to pick up specific radio stations (like Jazz.FM) or post to this journal.

Date: 2011-04-23 03:53 pm (UTC)I have a 3G iPhone that my employer provided me. It's in terrible shape. You are correct that the iOS 4.x software is at fault. It's the equivalent of trying to install Windows 7 on a Windows XP computer - the new OS needs more system memory and CPU power than the 3G provides.
The 3GS is said to be better, but obviously will be in the same boat in about a year's time. I'd recommend the iPhone 4.
You might want to try a couple things in the interim: http://osxdaily.com/2010/07/28/iphone-3g-slow-ios4/
