We went to the fundraiser up the street from our church this morning, for the employee of our church whose needs were being met by the Lutherans rather than by our own leadership. Many individuals from our congregation were there; we quickly met Wendy, one of St. Paul's pastors, who explained that, well, this is just what they DO in their tradition. She also confirmed the added blessing of a church-related fund that is doubling the contributions made at the pancake breakfast; based on that, we donated quite a bit more than our Friends here had donated, but still with the knowledge that it would be paid-forward at least once, and hopefully twice once our own finance people see what was done through no action of their own. Many thanks to those of you whose contributions helped become a part of what we gave.

While I usually have little use for college basketball, I was thrilled to listen along, on the way to cardio late this afternoon, at the end of the game as 11-seeded Virginia Commonwealth became the biggest underdog yet to knock off a #1 seed in this year's NCAA tournament, joining 8-seed Butler and over-seeded #3 UConn in the Final Four along with the genuinely 4th-seeded Kentucky.  I'm sure the power-conference honks will be using the word "flukes" and the phrase "blind squirrels" in describing this anomaly, but I'm loving it.

Our film for the evening was Days and Clouds, a Netflixery about a middle-aged couple with a cool college-aged daughter, experiencing and ultimately overcoming some severe financial problems. It was awfully close to our own 2006 bone at times, but we rejoiced with them as they worked their way through the very similar labyrinth of decisions, and doubts, and ultimately dedication to being together in spite of it all.
