As sad and tragic as this earthquake/tsunami news has been today, there's a certain sickness in seeing the leaps that journalists will go to find something they think is locally relevant to add to their own front page stories about it.

Sure enough, the local fishwrap had to make this reference to the earthquake lab at one of the local colleges:

Canisius seismograph picks up quake

This isn't very far off from the late 70s National Lampoon parody of the typical American mid-size city Sunday newspaper, which I've kept my copy of for years. Written and edited by an entourage of NatLampers including P.J. O'Rourke and eventual Home Aloner John Hughes, it put this sadly appropriate-to-the-point story, with heading and sub-hed, on the front page of their spoof:

One oddity of this coincidence is that I actually sat down and read the Sunday Buffalo News this past weekend, for the first time in ages. As in the real paper-paper, which the church gets and leaves in its "Eternal Perks" coffeehouse for members to hang out in before or between services. It was sad how little has changed in their layout, story selection or content in all these years, other than everything being smaller thanks to the decimation of the advertising sections by Craigslist and Recessionlist.  Even the comics haven't changed a bit since we last subscribed, sometime very early this century. They still carry Prince Valiant, Moose and Molly, Beakman and Jax, and other things that haven't been funny since the 1950s if they even were then.

I wonder what  Yomiyuri Shimbun would print in response to a major disaster in Buffalo. Probably one word:
