Just a quick snippet of what I'm planning to tell a sanctuary full of mostly cranky old people in their 60s tomorrow morning, wherein I plan to preach against the concept of "prosperity gospel" that I find so contrary to what's actually inside the tin:

It would be way too easy to make fun of the extreme examples of the preachers of this kind of gospel- PTL Club’s Jim Bakker and his gold-plated bathroom fixtures, and whatever that Benny Hinn guy is all about. I still mix him up with Benny Hill and expect him to be chasing young girls around trees while the organist plays “Yakkety Sax.”

Do I dare bring a copy of the sheet music?

I've found a free online "sample page" of it, which should be enough to make the point. If the organist is a 68-year-old retired schoolmarm who would probably MI or TIA if I did it, I'm gonna have to pass, but if it's the cool cat kinda guy I had the last time I did one of these, I'm in:)

Please do give us a full report. I bet a retired skoolmarm can handle it. Most of them have seen, heard, and done just about everything -- if if they would never admit it.

That's a sermon I'd like to hear.

"The Devil, the proud spirit, cannot endure to be mocked."

I doubt this place has mp3 capability- hell, cassettes might be beyond them- but if you want to read it, I put it up:

"Share the wealth?" Are you calling our Savior a Communist?

One of my favorite examples of creating God in our own image and likeness are the Teabaggers who quote Jesus driving out the moneylenders from the temple as an example of the sort of tax revolt they espouse. (http://colorado.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2010/12/the-fourth-tea-party/ ) Never do they mention the only thing Jesus ever said about taxes, which was to pay them. (Matthew 22:21, Mark 12:17, Luke 20:25)

Seriously, good job on the sermon.

Yes.

And now I have an image of Benny Hill chasing three girls waving a crucifix at them...
