This was a relatively bad day up until about 5. Things didn't happen that I needed to (mostly clients returning information, answers and payments), while others did happen that I didn't need (things getting served on and filed against clients at the absolute and almost-absolute last minute). It also included plenty of dead time- waiting for mail at the office, which I broke up by going to BN and trying out a Nook, which I really didn't like- as well as a fair amount of dread time, as we hear more and more about the one OMGSnowpocalypse! that's finally destined to hit us.  The day started with a funeral and ended with, what else?, me getting to the damn gym and forgetting the book I wanted to continue reading.

All's I can say, though, is that if Invention, Son of Necessity, were to be played by Hill Street Blues's Bruce Weitz, at about 5:10 p.m., he picked up my iPhone and said, "Hi, Ma."

----

I've been reading Broken, the sci-fi dystopic novel from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] firynze's just-as-lovely publishing house, Candlemark & Gleam. So far, though, I've only been reading it on my laptop, in a perfectly manageable .pdf format. The writing is gorgeous, the pace crisp, the type and turns just fine for even a 20th-century page-turner like me.

Yet stuck with nothing to read and little on the overhead teevees except pre-Super Bowl drivel and Egypt/Snowpocalypse stories, I remembered: I bought this book online. I have a receipt in my email. It has a download link in it. Kate does not make you mizzable with logins and specialized reading software or DRM crap. One click, and 338 pages were on my iPhone screen. For me, I had two choices- slightly smaller than I'd like (but still readable for a 30-60 minute sitting) with the display moving up-and-down nicely, or slightly bigger than that but a little harder to navigate (downward slides tend to move it side-to-side and the one size up then slides off the edge a bit).

It was fine. It was perfect. It saved my night from an attack of the deeps and darks. And at the moment I ended at the top of page 44, Susan, the author, blowed up the 2009 reconstruction of Yankee Stadium in a reference to a 2040s war , making the purchase completely worthwhile for me even if she goes all Bullwer-Lytton on me from this moment forward, which I'm sure she won't.

----

How much do I love this? I want you to see it for yourself.

The first Friend of this page to email me with the word "Broken" in the subject line will be sent a free download link to the book. Free to you, that is; I'm buying a second and will send it to the lucky winner. Just two conditions- well, one, since having your email address is kinda necessary but I'll have that, right? You must give me your word that you'll play nice and not give out your download link to others. On the other hand, it's all yours, and multiply yours, for whatever formats, devices or platforms you may ever want to put it on. That's the beauty of an online publisher who's a She and not an It.

Well? Gwon. Somebody's gonna beat you to it.

ETA. No more telephone calls, please, we have a winner! [livejournal.com profile] thanatos_kalos will hear that vorp-vorp-vorp noise in her Inbox in a day or so, which won't be a TARDIS landing (a common occurrence for her in Cardiff) but her .pdf of the book! The rest of you: read the sample, and buy!

I am tickled four shades of crimson that you're enjoying the book so much, and that you want to share it. Thank you so much, and thank you on behalf of Susan, too!

(hmmm, so the iPhone is comfy to read on? I played with one this weekend and flicked around the Kindle app on it, and it wasn't bad. Dangit, I have no idea what Thingie to get to read on...)

You're both very welcome, and very deserving.

As for the question: I don't know if I could handle a whole read on just an iPhone, but gym-my segments of it? Sure, sofa so good. I do need to brush up on my Safari and screen manipulation, though; when, say, I see a mention of Sky Ranger on page 183, I have no idea how to search back to see where he was in first (or most recent) reference. CTRL keys don't seem to work on a platform that doesn't have any such keys.

So it's working well for you at the gym? That's where I'd be doing a good bit of the reading, I suspect.

Hrmmmmm.

It's a damned fine page-turner, isn't it?
