A commenter on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political, in response to this entry, about a crusade in our state's highly liberal Capital region to take down an "I Am Gay" billboard because it might infect Teh Homo on people who see it:

This month has been very confusing to me. Every day on my way into work, I'm forced to believe I'm a Mormon, a Christian, a Doctor and a car.

Do scroll up to see all the stupid in the OP, by the way. My favorite line comes from the fundie city councilman who said,

“Now, I don’t care if you’re gay, straight or whatever, but I don’t think it’s necessary to advertise for them,” he said. “This is not kosher, as far as I’m concerned.”

I'd better check with my Jewish friends to make sure that reference doesn't offend anyone;)

They're on the CDTA buses here, too.

Every time I see it, I crack up. I am gay, and this is where I stay, and you can call me ray, or you can call me jay..

I just. I don't even.

THAT'S HERE? Sweet Caucasian Baby Jesus, somebody needs a thump on the head with the sense-stick!

I see those billboards all over the area, and when I do, they ALWAYS make me smile. So who do I call to COUNTER protest, I wonder, and offer support and approval for the designers of that advertising?

I passed that billboard a whole bunch when Das Boy and I were driving back and forth doing car-shopping things. The argument over it just...boggles me. It's a very simple, straightforward, not-hurting-anyone little sign.

But what do I know? I might call something kosher, and I might think I'm a car.

I'm reminded of an old Mark Russell line during the 70s furor about gay teachers supposedly influencing students to become gay:
"If that were true, today, I'd be a nun."

Mark's a Buffalo guy through and through. I just quoted one of his old Comedy Special bits in response to the Tucson thing, in which he asserted the Nuts Running America position on gun control, affecting a John Wayne accent-

Guns don't kill people, people kill people- by throwing bullets at one another!

I just remembered - I got to interview Mark in about 1980 when he appeared at our college.

Ha, I've driven by that! You know, I took it to be an affirmation message for the gay community that already lives in Albany, and didn't feel the least bit persuaded to be a gay black man.

"When I’m driving them to the Schenectady Public Library and they say, ‘What does gay mean?’ how do I answer that question?” she said. “How do I expose them to such content?”

I always find the "How dare they make me step up to the plate as a parent and explain the world to my kids!" reaction to be pretty hilarious.

We never had any trouble answering Emily's questions when she came to us with them. She somehow seems not to have been scarred for life. Go figure.

Not being a parent myself, I was wondering about that.
I mean, wouldn't a simple "Sometimes men love men, and women love women." fly? Especially if these kids are only daycare age? It's not like they have to get into the mechanics of what those men and women do in the bedroom.
A problem I've noticed though, is that people who are most bothered by knowing someone is gay is that their mind automatically DOES focus on what goes on in the bedroom. I've always thought that's an individual issue that you can't really blame on anyone else...

Oh and, she thinks these type of billboards should only be relegated to industrial zones, on the outskirts of town.... because that is where the gheys live... just wandering aimlessly around in their natural habitat...
