♫Dude Skypes Like a Lady♫
Jan. 24th, 2013 12:45 pmThe Manti Te’o story just got weirder. As if it could:
Manti Te’o’s beautiful fake girlfriend, the one whom he spent multiple hours on the phone with, was actually a man.
Milton Grimes, lawyer to Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, who is accused of creating the hoax, told the New York Daily News that it was a one-man show and that his client impersonated the voice of Lennay Kekua, the woman Te’o came to know as his beloved girlfriend.
“[Te’o] thought it was a female he was talking with,” Grimes told the Daily News. “It was Ronaiah as Lennay.”
Cue any and all Ace Ventura jokes.
The lawyer in question, who represented Rodney King in his civil suit against the LAPD, was less forthcoming on why he did it. He claims it wasn't a prank but "establishing a communication with someone. ... It was a person with a troubled existence trying to reach out and communicate and have a relationship."
Mmmmmkay then.
We've yet to see and hear Teo's own confessional about the whole business, which, in keeping with the Oprahization of American news, is going to be on Katie Couric. It's sad to see how far she's fallen in just over four years- from anchoring one of the most trusted news desks in the country (and doing a perfectly good job of outing Caribou Barbie as a fraud when she got that chance) to running an afternoon chat show with makeovers and exercise tips.
Could she use this opportunity to reclaim her hard news cred? Given that she and Teo have the same publicist, I wouldn't expect that. Or the Spanish (or any other) Inquisition.
