THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) - It took an undercover operation, but Greek police have blown a hole in a ring of alleged crooks who had cornered the donut market in a beach resort.
It started with complaints that two Bulgarian men and a former Greek wrestling champion were using violence to choke off the trade by other donut vendors on Paliouri beach in the Halkidiki peninsula near Thessaloniki.
So an undercover officer posed as a donut seller, police said Tuesday, and he was attacked, leading to the arrest of the three aggressive donut sellers.
As a result, they have been charged with blackmail and fraud. They also were charged with food safety violations after police found they had stashed their product in an abandoned hotel that was open to the elements and used by bathers as a toilet.
Police also captured members of a prostitution ring known by the trade name of "Timmy's Ho's."

After spending the last ten thousand years chopping off one another's heads, conning them with wooden livestock, burning each other's cities down, inventing new ways to get each other to die horribly, blowing each other up, shooting each other, and threatening to start a war because two of 'em can't agree on who's got prior claim to the name "Macedonia", donut extortion is just the sort of petty sakhlamares I'd expect out of that neighborhood.
