OK, this sucks:
Sep. 13th, 2010 11:47 amOne of my longtime AOL friends, who adopted a daughter about Em's age, sent a very sad message out to many of her friends this morning:
Need help. Jessica's boyfriend of 18 months passed away yesterday and the family is struggling working class poor. He had no life insurance and SS only covers so much. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Just call Caspar's funeral home @ 1-800-314-1890 and tell them it's for Richard Auffrey's funeral costs.
This is so gut-wrenching. A co-worker of mine lost a baby to SIDS a decade or so ago, and one of her closer bosses, who was trying to shepherd that through the grief industry, commented to me, "Anyone who thinks lawyers are bad should try dealing with a funeral home."
I am putting a request through to
wellwishers to see if they'll post it, and will try to send what we can, as well. It is tragic that our nation's financial system allows the families of infants and children to be subjected to the grief-and-guilt machine that our funeral homes and cemeteries perpetuate; and yes, we're just as bad, with Eleanor and I still carrying the small life insurance policies taken out on us as kids but not having done the same for her. (I will be calling Dan....Tullis or Joel....Clark to fix that real quick.)
If you can do anything, even if it's just donating a buck to the WWLJ comm if you see it posted, Deb and her daughter would love you for it, as do I.
