The highlight of my day:
Sep. 7th, 2010 06:42 pmseeing someone wearing this t-shirt, which I am almost certainly going to order:
It's apparently from some show called the It Crowd, which I assume someone is going to tell me I need to be watching.
Other than that, I was run from pillar to post, from before 9 until just about 6, and my desk still looks like a bomb hit it. Just a slightly different-looking bomb than was ticking there 12 hours ago.
On the bright side: Emily got her CARE package, I now have her mailing address in case any of yas want it, and despite the million and a half distractions, I accomplished basically everything I set out in my travels to do today, plus cranked out at least a few of the stripes and solids that had been with me behind the ol' 8-ball as of first thing this morning.
----
Didn't have much of a reunion with Em today; her Tuesday/Thursday classes are long and she had to come back a ways to get to the dorm loading area, so I saw her and one of her roommates only long enough for me to hand over the pack-age and us then to be on our ways. One striking thing, though, from when I was waiting for her was just how prevalent ASL is in the whole college community there. Academically, NTID is a separate school, but its students are integrated throughout all of the facilities, and it is immensely cool just to watch this totally foreign language being spoken before your very eyes. I'd taken a basic ASL course ages ago, and had hoped Em and I might do one over the summer, but my brief sightings of it today made it even more a priority for me, so I can rise above the level of the Dumb Shrug in response to conversations there that might be directed at me.
Almost on cue, on the way home, 107.7 the Lake played the CSN version of "Wooden Ships." (I've always been a bit more partial to the Airplane setting of it, but theirs is great, too.) That first line works as well for ASL as for anything else:
If you smile at me, I will understand, 'cause that is something everybody everywhere does in the same language.
