Yesterday evening I was washing up while cooking my dinner, with the back door open for the breeze, and kept hearing scrabbling sounds from the back porch room. All I could see through the plastic corrugated roof was black bird bodies and feet. It seems the crows were using it as a slide, or a prizefighting arena, or something.

Today, after dumping some water on the plants outside and before dinner, I did a bit of deadheading and moved on to cut back some of the ivy where it was starting to flow into the driveway. Then suddenly there was a grey and cream patch staring at me with two baleful eyes. Mama Violet bedded down in the ivy. Time to stop clipping.

Day06_Leap_of_Faith

With Calpain whispering into the ear of our prompt master, we got saddled with a pair of idioms that have no business in a drawing challenge: jumping to conclusions and a leap of faith. Faced with the options of drawing a pony jumping a moat to reach the town of Conclusions or drawing Faith plummeting to her death, Faith was easier. I did most of the pencil work on time but it was only today that I finished it up. The submitter for day 6 is still open for a few more hours, so, success! Challenge met.

Day07_Chilling_Yakutian_Snow_Pony

And presto! Yakutian snow pony chilling in the snow, where it's chilly. Since chilling = resting and thus doesn't require props like an ice box or chili or bubble gum or such the like, I went with that. It was the lesser of two weevils. I chose a Yakutian snow pony, for emphasis. Alas, snow is not easy to draw.

Minnesota House DFL leader Hortman, husband killed in apparent ‘politically motivated’ shooting; Sen. Hoffman, wife wounded

Authorities still searching for suspect in shooting of 2 Minnesota state lawmakers

Apparently he dressed up like a cop, because of course he did, and residents are advised not to open the door to police unless there are multiple officers present. I'd go one step further and say that you should never open the door to an unexpected official until you've confirmed that they're supposed to be there. If they are legit, they have an ID, and you have a phone number you can call - your local precinct, if they're cops, your gas company, whoever it is. (Uh. Maybe step out the back door to call if they say they're from the gas company. I mean, use your best judgment.)

Weirdly specific firefox question

If I'm typing a URL and I then use the scroll wheel to middle-click it in the address window it will open in a new tab rather than on the same tab I'm on.

Now, when I open a new tab by clicking a link to open a new tab it opens right next to the tab I'm on. If I do it via the address window or the new tab button then it opens all the way at the end of my tabs, which is annoying and disorienting if I'm not already all the way at the end.

Is there a setting, perhaps in about:config, that I can adjust to change this behavior so it always opens new tabs next to the one I'm on?

The last season of The Strange Case of the Starship Iris is finally here.

Okay, only the first episode so far (and two pre-season teasers) but... omg.

I've summed this one up for you all before as "Everybody is gay while fighting fascism in space" and "Turns out, fascism is both racist and inefficient", so yes, that does make it the perfect thing to listen to while heading out to protest. (Speaking of....)

I didn't need this for The History Guy remembers 'Old Glory' and The Commandant's Own plays 'Stars and Stripes Forever' for Flag Day, so I'm sharing it here.

Two weeks after seeing the CGI Lilo and Stitch at the cinema I'm watching the original with the kids. And it's so much better. The direction, the writing, the acting are all just much higher quality.

The remake felt much clumsier. And I don't really understand why.

Edit: Just realised that they entirely cut the Ugly Duckling part from the remake. Why would you do that? It's key to Stitch's arc!
And all of the bits where Lilo how to be like Elvis.

In fact, nearly all of the bits where Lilo talked to Stitch and built a relationship with him.

It's been Friday the 13th. I came really close to getting run over on my morning walk—on one of the crossings by the main park entrance, of course. I got the walking man sign and started to cross, and the driver of the small blue pick-up waiting at the light started turning left right through my path. I sped up, turned to face him and unloaded at him. I don't think he was going to stop till I shouted. He rolled down his window and said sorry in a not very sorry way, rather startled. A pedestrian crossing the street with the walk sign, how novel. Had his dog on the passenger seat, a Border Collie type dog, who wisely kept silent during the brief conversation.

Usually it's a Tesla. But so far it's always that intersection.

No, but I'd like to tell you that you urgently need a proofreader. Are you aware that you just made me answer the same question about my desired salary three different ways? Once was plenty enough! Also, why are you asking what currency I want it in, and since you are asking, why is one time US dollar at the top of the drop down and the other two times it's alphabetical under "United States"? Did you even look at this before posting, and once again afterwards?

(These people really urgently need help with this, but unless this is a Secret Test I guess telling them wouldn't help me much.)

Alternative answer to the question: "Yes, I'd like to tell you that I really need money, please give me some, with or without hiring me first."

I used a live performance for 'Superstition' for Friday the 13th and Blame Someone Else Day. I will probably use this for a future Friday the 13th post.

The much abused privet-like bush under the dining room window, which I'm considering trimming, has emitted lots of its little white rose-like flowers. Not all over, in patches.

Found in the street

A few days ago, I was walking and noticed what looked like a clump of oak flowers. I forget what made me turn it over, but it proved to be this girlie:

(Maybe 3" high)

I propped her up against the base of the nearest lamp post. When I next went by that spot, I looked and she'd disappeared, so I figured whatever little girl had lost her, had found her again. But today I was there again and noticed a clump of oak flowers in the ivy next to the pavement/sidewalk ... so second best happy ending, home she came with me.

This is pretty clearly a girl bear. Not only is she very petite, she has two hair ornaments, and one of them, plus the tuning end of her guitar, feature hearts. There's a flower painted around the painted hole in the guitar body. One of the hair ornaments is an ice lolly; the other is an even smaller critter, with a circular body and rabbit-like ears. The guitar and the ice lolly are multiple plastic pieces fitted together: the plate at the base of the guitar strings as well as the tuning block, the white bottom half of the lolly, even the front of its stick is a yellow piece. The hairpiece animal has black painted eye-dots and a raised dot nose; the bear herself has two eyes and a slightly smaller nose, affixed in the traditional manner for small stuffed bears' eyes, but the nose is just a little below the eyes, a snub-nose effect.

Very carefully designed to be irresistably cute, to extract pocket money from little girls—or adult collectors. I suspect she's part of a Japanese line of collectible plushies being sold at Asian malls in the Bay Area. Or maybe she's just a very cannily designed tchotchke produced in such bulk that the detailing doesn't cost too much at all.

Certainly works. Anyone with any nurturing instinct would be drawn to her. But the economic implications make me wince. Remember, she's tiny. (See the book and onions in the background.) She's small enough that she might be meant for a backpack zip or a keychain, but I don't see any sign of a torn-off attachment. And her legs and arms are rudimentary, stiff shapes under the fuzz, probably a plastic frame. This isn't a bear to hug and take to bed, but something to covet, and amass, and leave sitting on a shelf.

She'll go on my shelf now.

Brian was the last of the three Wilson brothers, Brian played bass, Carl lead guitar and Dennis drums. The other two members of the Beach Boys, Mike Love - a cousin - and Al Jardine, are still alive.

Brian has been in a medical conservatorship for the last year. Trouble with alcohol and drugs probably accelerated things. He met his last wife at a car dealership where she was working, which began a chapter where it was found that Wilson's psychiatrist was exploiting him and his finances, eventually resulting in a restraining order. When his wife died, Wilson entered into a decline, finally culminating in the conservatorship.

There's so much that can be said about The Beach Boys and their influence on music and various groups and musicians, and their being a core for surf/beach music in the '60s. I spent a few hours tonight revising a bunch of my Beach Boys music for my band in Lord of the Rings Online and adding some more songs to my catalog, I think I'll be performing them tomorrow night in an impromptu concert as I need to do some testing on my band as I've been having some system problems.
