A literally uplifting tale of a grumpy old man finding joy in a balloon ride;
A far cheerier film about an embedded reporter surrounded by blood, gore and exploding bombs.
Last year's Best Picture Oscar went to:
A touching retrospective of a New Orleans woman's life and loves;
A story about exploited young kids from Mumbai, portayed with amazing verisimilitude by, well, exploited young kids from Mumbai.
The previous year?
A legal thriller where the big corporation ultimately gets it in the end;
A rampage of a motion picture where, pretty much, everybody gets it in the end. Or the head. Or the sternum. Possibly all three.
Before that? The Departed. Crash. Million Dollar Baby. Not a dry eye or an uplifted soul in the house.
So rather than fight it, I herewith join it. Out from the drawer, my surefire winner of this coming year's Best Picture award:
Hey. If Oliver! could win, anything is possible.
