Nothing like a little deduction to start off a Monday.
I was scheduled to be in federal court downtown at 10:30, an hour from now. On Friday, my downstate opponent, still juggling tons of post-Sandy reschedulings, asked for an adjournment, which I agreed to. No confirmation of it being approved later that day, nor this morning. Finally, though, an email. From him. Asking for it in writing.
Knowing the corruptability of absolute power that comes with life tenured judges, I naturally assumed I was not excused from showing up. First, though, I thought to put in a call, to the specific court officer in charge of such things. I looked up the number in our trusty attorneys directory. It's beep-beep-beep-dead. Oh yeah. They moved across the street and took the opportunity to change all the phone numbers.
Website, right? Wrong. Just two numbers there- the main number that is ONLY TO BE USED FOR EMERGENCIES and a fax number.
And yet they were enough. For the old main DO NOT USE number was 332-7XX0 and the old fax, 332-7XX5.
The new DO NOT USE number was 551-1XX0, and the new fax, 551-1XX5.
The old non-emergency number I had for adjournments was 332-7XX4.
Did I get through and confirm not needing to go?
No shit, Sherlock:)
I still don't have the formal confirmation of it. I put the over-under on THAT at about 10:25.
ETA. I lose. They confirmed it by email at 9:58. Back to actual work now.
