Joyful, joyful, we a-door thee!

captainsblogFrom the last week of February until, almost, the last week of November, we lived without a functioning overhead garage door. That changed late yesterday, when the contractor reconnected our opener to his beautifully installed, insulated, and much lighter one- and one without the homicidal springs that had lifted the old wooden door up and down all but one last time for over 50 years.
When it first failed, both of our vehickles were stuck in the garage. This company came, quickly and freely, to manually raise the door so we could get them out, and they gave us a couple of estimates for a replacement. Funds for that were always planned to come out of our Sisyphyus-like mortgage refi, but once the gales of November (and the snowplow contract) arrived, we made temporary arrangements to order and install it.
Only one guy came out this time. Nobody could be expected to lift that thing with a dead spring on one side, so he wisely sawed off about a third of the old wooden door to make the remaining two-thirds light enough to move up and down the track without physics. For at least a few moments, the door was missing on the top third; I half-expected Mister Ed to stick his head over the entrance and start making snarky comments to Willllburrrr.
By late afternoon, all three thirds were gone, the new one was in, and by nightfall I'd cleared enough crap on the garage floor for Eleanor to get the truck in so she could back it out, frost-free, in time for work at 8 this morning. Today was too long and far-away for me to work on the other half, but tomorrow I will finish the job so both chariots can reside in there for the duration of the winter.
Assuming, of course, we have one.
