Frost:Nixon = Cold:______
Dec. 3rd, 2008 10:05 pmApparently, there was quite the brouhaha at the DC premiere of the new film about David Frost's late-70s chat show series with former President Nixon. Little of the controversy had to do with Frost or Nixon, but with just how analogous it would be to attempt such an interview series with our current soon-to-be-former Resident. Leading the charge against such an analogy was that wild and Foxy guy Chris Wallace (who is really looking frighteningly like his father these days), who defended against the comparison thusly:
It trivializes Nixon's crimes and completely misrepresents what George W. Bush did...I think to compare what Nixon did, and the abuses of power for pure political self-preservation, to George W. Bush trying to protect this country—even if you disagree with rendition or waterboarding—it seems to me is both a gross misreading of history both then and now.
The only thing that seems clear to me right now is that it's too early to tell. Rendition and waterboarding are enough for me to start the conversation, and to continue it through some post-January investigations so we can find out just how badly Dubya and Co. did damage our constitutional landscape.
Even less clear than that, though, is whether there would ever be a post-administration mea culpa of the type Nixon dished out. Since all we can do for the moment is guess, well, why don't we?
[Poll #1309039]
* We probably should avoid inclusion of John Barrowman, even though it would be cool for him and Bush to sit there making comparisons as to the bigger prick.

I'm going with my default icon for this one as a welcome-back of sorts for a long-lost Friend who reappeared the other day. I've missed your tales of life and am happy to have them, and you, back here:)
