Quick bar-bet question: what U.S. university has a campus more than 200 miles in size? Answer: Cornell, which saw fit to plant its medical school on the east side of Manhattan, quite a trip on the Blue Light Bus from the southeast edge of Ithaca's Collegetown.

It seems that, every decade or so, New York Hospital-Cornell Medical College winds up with an unfortunate patient. When I was an undergraduate, CMC admitted the Shah of Iran as a cancer patient in October of 1979, nine months after his exile from the Ayatollah's rule and barely two weeks before the militant storming of the U.S. Embassy. It could be argued that Cornell's acceptance of this pariah patient led directly to the 444-day hostage crisis and, essentially, to Ronald Reagan's hostile takeover of our own government the following November.

Cornell was nice enough to admit the Shah under a fake name. Word leaked anyway, and when the time came for The Sun to put out its annual joke issue that fall, the lead story and editorial were obvious:

Sell the Shah.

----

Our next brush with greatness was in the 80s, when the med school's sweatshop treatment of its residents led to the death of a promiment family's daughter, and in turn to Libby's Law to prevent the multiple sleepless nights that may have impaired the judgment of her treating physicians-in-training.

At least the Medical College admitted HER under her own name.

----

That leads us to today's news, and to the Things I Learned From My Alma Mater contribution to this past weekend's incredible thread of stupid:

If a prominent NFL player shows up at your emergency room complaining of a gunshot wound, (a) don't admit him under a fake name, (b) be somewhat suspicious of his claim to have been shot on Gangbanger Night at Applebee's, and (c) whatever you do, be sure to report the gunshot incident to the authorities as you're required to. After all, it's not like he's the Shah of Iran or something.
