Back. Just about 24 hours after touching down in my sister's town for a business appointment I had there this morning, on a trip where I was followed, at seemingly every turn, by the ghosts of weird coincidence.
We went out to visit one of Donna's friends after dinner last night. On the way, we talked about this and that. She wondered aloud why neither of us had heard recently from one particular person. A bit later on, I got to telling her about a friend of ours who just became a grandma, and I reminded myself to pull up a baby-picture email this friend had sent me a few weeks back.
When we got back to her house, we each had an email waiting for us. Hers was from the person she had been wondering about. Mine was from the same friend I had been talking about. Neither of them is the type to send tons of emails every day, so this really was kinda on the odd side.

As I got ready for bed last night, I noticed a new paperback in her guestroom. This one, to be precise:
Donna's all for things nostalgiac, so it didn't surprise me to see it on her shelf. Nor did another book by this author take me aback. But what she didn't know, and I don't think I've mentioned here, is that Joey is yet another published blast from my forlorn past. He was a regular contributor to the Cornell Sun when I was there (among many other publications from then and since), and I often copy-edited his stuff on Sunday nights.

Finally, there was court today. In a little over two hours, I saw more random acts of unkindness- of lawyers to their own clients, of clients not showing up for their own hearings, of lawyers futzing around with other lawyers' clients- than I normally see in six months. (My own hearing went fine, I'm happy to say.) But in one of the cases ahead of mine, someone made mention of a pending estate matter; this had nothing to do with the client I'd gone there for, but it did remind me, and I duly made a note on my pad, to "call Tim," another client with a similar issue.
As I headed home, I checked voice mail. One call awaited me. From Tim.

You take the deja road and I'll take the vu road and I'll be in the Twilight Zone before ye.
