I got to wake up to this happy news on the online fishwrap this morning. The site of the incident is fairly close to our house. How close? Well, if I kept going at the halfway point of my usual run route and headed toward it instead of home, I'd probably be within a few blocks of the crater that would've resulted if this wackjob hadn't been caught:

Federal and local police agencies early today removed from an Amherst apartment a significant amount of explosive materials and dangerous chemicals that were and could be used for bombmaking. They then decontaminated the apartment.

Duncan Badding, 25, of 66 Williamsburg Square was arraigned in Amherst Town Court later in the morning on charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and reckless endangerment, first degree. Police could not quantify the exact amount, but said they found explosives ready to be detonated and other chemical substances that could be used to make more bombs. Most of the materials were obtained legally.

At this time, no links to a terrorist plot have been discovered.

...

Officers were called to one of the units at 66 Williamsburg Square about 6 p.m. Wednesday, for a report of a man shooting a rifle at bottles in his backyard, Amherst Assistant Police Chief Charles Cohen said.

Police encountered Badding, who agreed to allow officers inside his residence, where more guns were discovered, along with “suspicious homemade explosives,” Cohen said.

...

Neighbors also milled around the scene, and were kept about a block away by law enforcement authorities. It was unclear if anyone in the neighborhood was evacuated during the incident.

Some of residents, who asked that their names not be used, said some in the neighborhood – a generally quiet, tree-lined community – jokingly referred to the man taken into custody as the “Unabomber,” because of some of the things he did at his property.

Oh, how cheery, that last part. Even scarier, though, was the article's first gun-nut comment off the block:

Amherst cops are ridiculous. Just because you have a gun, doesn't mean you're dangerous. This man let them in his house, so obviously he thought he had nothing to hide or done anything wrong. This safe little town has cops with nothing better to do than exaggerate their findings to make them look like heroes, when all they are is a bunch of incompetent, glory hungry goons. Of course, there are exceptions, but from my experience and observations, I can say that they do not have the best decision making capabilities. I would love to know more about this "rifle", which is most likely a small pellet or bb gun.

Which he was discharging outside.

Blessedly, most of the subsequent commenters called the dude out (actually, both the perp and the commenter) for Teh Stupid, but I'm still a little on edge as long as we have an angry (mostly) white (mostly) male populace brainwashed into taking their "Second Amendment Remedies" to their cratery graves with them.

Just keep me away from them, plzkthnx.

According to Justice Scalia, for whom the Constitution is Holy Writ, the text says "keep and bear arms." So that means that any weapon you can physically carry is OK. Cannon are out, but shoulder-mounted surface-to-air missile launchers should be just fine under the Second Amendment.

I'm sure your neighbor was just patriotically building "bombs bursting in air."
