One of the casualties of rights fees and such crap in the radio/podcastverse was PRI's Whadya Know. It was the main public-radio news and trivia-related broadcast, before Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and Says You and the like got splattered all over NPR affiliates. Years ago, I traveled to Cleveland to see Michael Feldman broadcast the show live to America, years before Eleanor and I trekked a similar distance the other way to Syracuse for a "live" taping of Wait Wait several nights before its airing.

WKY was a staple of Rochester public radio, but Buffalo's outlets carried it only briefly, on delay, and dropped it over a decade ago. Every now and again, I check to see if the show has expanded its podcast; as of my last check, and even now, they only carried the brief opening monologue, likely because the house band (John Tulene on piano and various Jeffs on bass) played full-length jazz pieces that would need payments to "clear" them into Internetland.  Sadly, only the monlogue remains available as of this week's show, but their website also brings sad news this week of the loss of the host's announcer, sidekick and generally good guy, Jim Packard:

The cast and crew of Whad’Ya Know? are devastated by the loss of our dear friend, Jim Packard.

“Jim was my only successful long-term relationship,” Feldman said.  “He was simply the best and irreplaceable,” he concluded.

For 27 years, Jim kept Whad’Ya Know? on time and Michael on track. He stood by Michael’s side, taking the jabs and barbs of the host with grace. Jim kept score and awarded prizes for the quiz and took listeners to the “Town of the Week.”

A memorial service is planned for July 18, 2012, 4pm at the Elks Lodge in Madison.

We'll miss you, Jimi!

And that's all the happiness that isn't:(

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of Jim Packard. I didn't care for the show, but Packard was the best part of it.
