.... and this time too soon?
The 5K I was thinking about entering, for which I've been accelerating nine weeks of couch-to-5K training into more like three, and which got suddenly and suspiciously called off late last week?
It's back on. Sort of. Another running organization has stepped in, gotten it sanctioned by USA Track & Field (something the original guy hadn't bothered to do), and, best of all, is letting anybody who registered through the other group run it for free.
Since I never got to register for it with the original group, I'll still have to pay, but it's a much better deal now: 20 bucks, versus the 35 to 90 dollar numbers I'd heard from the original promoter. I'm still a little concerned about the signup, since it asked for my information but didn't give me any online confirmation, so I'm just going to drive down to the Ralph on Friday afternoon and pick up the packet that had damn better be there (and for Kimmy as well, if she isn't here yet and wants me to).
All of which begs the question of whether I'm ready for this. By Saturday, I'll be on schedule to be doing four 3-to-5 minute running bursts over a half hour, with 5-minute warmup and cooldown surrounding them and walk intervals interspersed with them. I talked to one of my friends from our weight workout class, and she thinks that's enough to git r done; that the crowd cranks up your adrenalin all by itself and gives you more momentum than you ever get just running by yourself.
I'm not out to break any records (not even personal ones, since I don't have any;), but just want to prove I can get behind an idea, crazy though it might seem, and see it through, no matter how hard the promoters work to fuck the whole thing up. Plus doing it in the company of a dear friend, who's coming a long way for a short run, makes it even more special. And ending it on the 50 yard line of the Ralph isn't quite as meaningful as home plate of Citi Field would be, but it isn't chopped liver, either.
Last chance to talk me out of this is Friday around 3. Have at it.
