All-Star Break
Jul. 13th, 2021 08:41 amOops.
I had most of this post all lined up, even the photo loaded, but after a long day including a road trip, ending with a movie, I didn't remember until I was nicely nestled between two furry animals and said, meh.
So consider it my personal All-Star break, first time since mid-January I missed a day of posting here. I could backdate this and nobody would care, but again I say, meh.
It'll just be the one day, though, unlike the traditional three-day baseball pause that is now four in the majors. Last night began with the Home Run Derby, which was won for the second year in a row by Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. I got to thinking about its counterparts in other sports. The NBA has a slam dunk competition, the NHL does a similar breakaway challenge, but what about the others? Sorely lacking. So I shall fix:
NFL: Sack the Quarterback competition, only with real quarterbacks and no offensive linemen. I'd love to see J.J. Watt drop Brady on his ass 35 times in the first round.
FIFA: I'm undecided between a flopping event and a Bribe the Site Selectors competition.
Auto racing: Pedestrians on the track! Awards for overall count and style points.
Am I missing any?

The brain fart of a sort at the end of the day bookended nicely with one from earlier in the day, which wound up working out well. Since I've been down to just this laptop, I've kept its two power supplies at home and in my local office; any time I travel to Rochester, I have to remember to pack one up. Usually, I take the home one, an aftermarket, since the original one has been wonky for about a month and takes quite a bit of jiggle-the-handle to get to connect and charge.
I sailed out of here yesterday with neither, realizing it only after getting on the 90. That's the point of really inconvenient to go back, so I had various alternative thoughts. I could suck it up and go back. Nah. Or take my chances on the hour and change I can usually get out of a battery. Nope. Instead, I triangulated in my now-caffeinated brain to the closest store that might have the part. It turned out to be a Staples about a mile from where I was headed. A very cool dude helped me at an early hour, finding a 65-dollar universal jobbie, but he took the time to look up it was correct for my unit and let me test it before heading out. Now I will switch out the wonky one for that office next time I go, leave it there, and I'll never forget again:)
It also got me the Sight of the Day: the detour to Staples made me get back on 441, at that point a controlled-access highway, from an on-ramp I usually don't use. I'd taken that same detour the previous Tuesday making a post-Fourth bank run. Both times, as I made the turn to the on-ramp, a gaggle of orange-vested DOT workers were busy at a triangular island that can't be much bigger than our bathroom. And the two of us made way more progress in those six days than these three paid workers had!
It reminded me of a fake commercial that Rochester's legendary morning man Brother Wease used to play back in his WCMF days: Applications are now being accepted for work at the state DOT! We have openings for the guy who leans on the shovel, the guy who looks in the hole, the guy who carries the sign, and the guy who waves the flag!
I posted that memory, and Wease remembered it as being one of his favorites:)

Oh, you want to SEE the progress! This is as of Sunday night:

One of the two denuded walls that's now largely retiled. All that remains to strip is the right angle behind and to the right of the throne; I've taken out quite a bit of the behind part (the tile, not my ass), but some will await having to disconnect and remove the tank, which is going to be an all-day job. The underlayment is in and we can now almost have a schedule for the final work to be done. Hopefully before the next Subway Series, which is in September.
----
And I'll end with The Sadz I found out about late yesterday. It's been a busy year at Rainbow Bridge, as almost all of Pepper's original Dog Church buddies have taken that walk. Another's grandpuppy just passed. But this was what got me unexpectedly:

That's the Twitter icon for a feed I check occasionally called Thoughts of Dog. It's where my occasional use of "fren" comes from to refer to a dog's BFF, living or stuffed. I decided to check it in my late-day travels and found the icon highlighted with white-on-black text next to it. I suspected why:

Or hug the stuffing out of any or all of yours.
