captainsblog: (B-lo home)
My Jeopardy tribute from yesterday has been updated with new things!

My afternoon was largely spent catching up with the Bills' first home playoff game since forever.  Their opponents were coached by our own 1990s backup quarterback- who engineered the biggest comeback in NFL history on Emily's first birthday. This one never got that out of hand, but it was a nailbiter until the end, ultimately resulting in our first playoff victory since Emily was three years old and leading to another home game a weekend from now against the Dontknow Tobedetermineds. The state allowed a modest crowd to attend for the first time all season, all of whom had to commit to multiple COVID tests before getting in and to serious distancing once inside. The testing allowed more than 98 percent of the fans in, and no reports of bad behaviour were exchanged.

More such black marks did continue to pile up from the coup attempt from earlier in the week. The memes from it have become legendary already: among my favorites-

Suck it, libs. Promises made, promises kept!

And-

So far, the saddest fallout from the incident was my finally being unfriended by one of my closest living relatives.  She remarried a few years ago to a serious MAGA, and the Koolaid has been strong with them throughout the past year. Today's parting exchange between us involved her first complaining about the "censoring" of the former President from social media; when I responded with a comparison to his shouting "fire" on a crowded ellipse, her last words were about why I was being so mean about it and not contributing to the healing of our differences.

Sailed Ships for 1000, Alex.

So yeah, I've been banhammered by my own relative.  Hopefully her own sister is cool with her supporting an insurrection ending with a dead cop.  Of the two of them, I always thought she was closest in spirit and sentiment to my own mother, her beloved Nana- and I was just thinking earlier today that the same "galloots" Mom wouldn't let me play with as a kid are the ones I occasionally see (not as my social media friends but commenting on mutual friends' posts) as being all-in Trumpernutters.

Mom didn't have much book larnin', but she was an excellent judge of character.  Hopefully that spirit will touch her granddaughter again before she goes totally over to the Dark Side.
