Authors and musicians say it over and over- support your local indy rather than going with Amazon. I try, I really try. But when I go to this supposedly author-friendly e-book site and get sold a book that, they acknowledge, can't be read on my device, it's teeth-pulling fun to get them to cancel the thing.


 

Garrett: Hi, my name is Garrett. How may I help you?
Ray: I am using you for the first time. I have purchased a book which appears on my PC but I want it on my Android tablet.
Garrett: Hi Ray.
Ray: The app says I have no books in my library
Garrett: Okay.
Ray: I try to download it through the browser and I get a screen full of xml code
Garrett: Okay.
Ray: I've clicked sync in the app but nothing appears
Garrett: I am sorry to hear that your newly purchased book in not on your Android Tablet.
Ray: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."
Garrett: I will be more than happy to assist you today.
Ray: Can I just cancel this order and buy the thing from Amazon, since they know what they're doing?
Garrett: Ray please note that we cannot cancel the order unless there is a problem with the book.
Garrett: Thank you.
Ray: If I can't read it there is obviously a problem with it.
Garrett: Okay.
Garrett: Ray may I have the name of the book please?
Ray: Finders Keepers
Garrett: Thank you.
Ray: I can see it in my library on the PC.
Ray: But I'd rather not drag the PC to the gym to read on the treadmill. I trip on the cords.
Garrett: Okay.
Ray: Okay. If I download this through the PC and then sneakernet it onto the tablet, will that work?
Garrett: Unfortunately this book is in a file format Adobe DRM PDF that is incompatible with your device and as a result we will be providing you with a Kobo store credit.
Ray: So I can buy another book I can't read? No. Either refund my purchase or transfer me to someone who can.
Garrett: Yes you can Ray.
Garrett: We will provide you with a Refund of $8.99 USD on your Visa Credit Card within 3-5 business days. To verify that your Credit Card has been refunded, please contact your Credit Card Company.
Ray: I used paypal. How do we work that?
Garrett: Okay.
Ray: And "okay" means?
Garrett: You will provided with a refund within 3-5 working days.
Ray: Thank you. I'll be looking for that.  Please do not ask me to take a survey. You wouldn't like me when I'm surveyed.
Garrett: Okay.




So now it's back to Kindlegarten, where I should've just gone in the first place.
