I took my first solo rides in Iggy today. Early for church- our friend Khristina is clearly in love with him and needs to work out sidecars so her husband and kids will all fit- and then again a couple hours ago, when I realized a bottle was empty, masquerading as full, and needed to be replaced. (Pop, you decadents- I use it to cut the wine, dammit.)

Shit eating grins all around.

Apparently there's a "pour the milk" phenomenon associated with Smart cars, where owners get all Zombie-like and "accidentally" dispose of essential kitchen liquids down the drain just so they will have an excuse to drive out to the store to replace it.

It's almost a video game, trying to keep an eye on the charge/discharge monitor to see if you're losing or gaining electricity as you ease on down the road.  The slightest ease-off on the pedal can put it into coast (and thus recharge) mode, and braking gets you major extra lives, or whatever you gamers call it.

Someone at church did ask about the gas mileage. This is going to take a while to get people used to.

In between those trips, I contributed even less to our carbon footprint: I mowed and weedwhacked the entire back yard, using nothing but our push mower for most of it, and the electric weedwhacker for the tight-in and really overgrown spots. I time my activities by the NPR podcasts I'm listening to during the efforts, and thus today took one Wait Wait and most of a This American Life.

Sadly, these tend to go into reruns or best-of's for holiday weekends, so I will likely need to load up on some extra shizzle before the Sixth follows the Fourth and Fifth.
