Lines and Landsharks.
Aug. 8th, 2015 09:55 pmDone met John Barrowman today. Three times, to differing extents. The first, I didn't even recognise him because he was just a Hey Hey Ordinary Guy walking out of the conference hotel as we were walking in. But Tink recognized him- and duly swooned when he said hello to her in passing.
Our weekend admission included one photo each with him, and that required waiting. Not Dead Stop, PA waiting, but we snaked round a second-floor corridor with no AC or outside ventilation and a lot of swooning women. (Barrowman's as gay as the day is long, but none of them care.) A couple with a cute lil kid was in front of us; the mom turned out to be from Tink's home town here and runs a knitting shop nearby that she'll be signing up for a class at. In time, we each got our turn in front of the screen: here's her post about hers (and those of her kid and kid's BF right before her):

Next came my turn:
Yes, I got the Dickey's cup in. We'd meet back with him later.
----
First, though, the Dealers Room- a Mos Eisley Cantina of pretties and merch, licensed and, um, otherwise. If something in pop culture exists, even if it never got officially released, chances are you can find it at one of these. Emily had asked for a copy of the pilot episode of the upcoming Supergirl series. Done. Meanwhile, with the new big-budget Fantastic Four movie coming out this weekend, there've been many mentions of a B-movie version of the Marvel origin story that legendary cheap director Roger Corman did in the early 90s.
It's mine:

I also found a nice gift for Eleanor at the fanart show; Emily's already given it a long-distance seal of approval:)
----
Next, Barrowman gave his first hour-long meetup with all the fans, doing it entirely as Q&A with folks who queued up to ask:

Great stories and interactions all the way around, including:
* He confirmed his Torchwood co-star Eve Myles's take from last year's show about the prosthetic lady parts the make-up department had done for her while she was pregnant. Also confirmed was that he often plays with his own parts in her general vicinity on-set, including an incident involving one of her hair rollers that will never be forgotten.
* We have a new tag line, thanks to a running gag on his new show Arrow: they were shooting a scene focusing on other characters, and he got talking on a different part of the set with another actor, thinking nobody could hear them. It had to do with the sound (loud) and smell (supposedly none) of farts coming from his fairly famous Captain Jack Ass. Ah, but the director and other actors COULD hear those words, because they heard a very annoyed "CUT!" followed by the director saying to Barrowman,
Fart in my mouth and prove it.
It became a scene-ending line for the rest of their shooting, and has now infected this particular part of Maryland.
* He talked a fair amount about his musical theater career, including his stint in the Broadway production of The Producers. At one point, they were rehearsing in Brooklyn, on an outdoor section of a soundstage, singing "Springtime for Hitler" in full costume and with the all-on stormtrooper dance moves- only to see a bunch of guys in black hats and phylacteries watching and steaming from beyond a fence. Yes, the producers of The Producers picked a Hasidic neighbourhood for this rehearsal. He recreated his reaction for us: "Everybody! Inside before they kill us!"
* Overall, he was a genuine, funny and accommodating guest. He riffed on the ASL signing being done to his left (the translator had to be replaced, she was laughing so hard), and at one point called up a five-year-old kid who was just crawling around in front of the question line, letting him Ask Jack Anything. Which he did in perfect five-year-old fashion:
Kid: Knock knock.
Barrowman: Who's there?
Kid: DOCTOR!
And with perfect timing and sweetness, he gave the kid his "Doctor Who?!?" punchline.
----
After a dunch/linner at the corner seafood joint, we headed back to the house. Besides the two dogs and cat, there's a new rescue in the house:

That's Sheldon- originally Penny the bunny until they discovered his "equipment"- but who I've taken to calling Gunny Rabbit after the SCTV parody "Captain Combat."
The day ended with us continuing a bizarre tradition begun last year, of watching the latest Sharknado entry. Last year's had a much better story and a LOT more good cameos- I hate to say it, but this series has definitely jumped the shark.
----
Tomorrow, there's an Orphan Black panel, another alleged appearance by the East Meadow author I STILL haven't seen since 1976, and a trip to see some other friends not seen since the mid-80s. Also, we hope, no farting in need of proofs.
