fresh off the boat.

You'll forgive a slight amount of exhileration now that dude's disembarked. I had a long, stressful, but largely successful workday today, one that was puncutated before, during and after my five separate hour-long engagements by news reports on the radio about the shootout, the citywide lockdown, and the ultimate capture of the second suspect....
who, it must be noted, is younger than our daughter. So much for all the millennials "getting it," huh.
We are so relieved that our friends out that way can once again resume something resembling normalcy in their lives. I still find myself profoundly disturbed that one so young could cause so much harm to some even younger, and to others just randomly.
I count on our criminal justice system to provide the closure that so many of us need. Maybe we'll get why's out of him as well as who's and when's and where's, but I tend to doubt it.
There were multiple stories today- one from Niagara Falls- about foreigners being subjected to mass police reactions just because of their skin color and their (in this case) Massachusetts license plates. They were investigated and released as harmless after what seemed, on the radio at least, to be several hours of swarthy suspicion. I do hope these bombers don't turn us into a nation of paranoiacs just because of how terrible this terror was. Because, if they do, they truly will have won.

Date: 2013-04-20 02:04 am (UTC)Too late I fear. If you've ever taken the T here they have "random" bag searches just like the TSA "randomly" selects people for backscatter/patdowns. In the case of the T, there's nothing random about it, if you're a dark skinned man who *might* be a muslim, prepare to eat pavement. If it's the TSA and you're a harmless little old lady, a child, handicapped, or a pretty young thing, look out. They're going to be inspecting your underthings for dangerousness.
Civil rights what? Where?
