I didn't even try getting back to sleep after feeding animals this morning, since I knew it was going to be a short spell in the sack before I'd have to be up and out of here anyway. This morning at 9:30 was the appointed (as in court-appointed) day and time for a hearing with a rather sleazy opposing party who canceled on me twice back in November. Sure enough, the cancellation call came in at 8:09, as I was literally backing the car out to head to the 9:30 deposition in Rochester. Apparently, the snow in Skaneateles was just horrid this morning. None of it had made it here, though, and only a few flurries of it got as far as Rachacha, so I don't expect the judge is gonna have much sympathy when I move to hold them in contempt for blowing me off a third time.

On the way on the Thruway, the Amber Alert lights were all a-blinky, and the overhead signs were displaying word of a red Dodge Intrepid that was being driven by a child abductor. I tuned in to the radio station assigned for such things, and the report was thorough- descriptions of snatcher, snatchee and car- but the thing was done by robo-computer voice, and details like the license plate number were almost inaudible.  The grab was made in Elmira, and the report said the alleged snatcher had ties to the Buffalo area, and sure enough, by this afternoon, an Alert Reader had seen the car, followed it to the Microtel I usually stay at when I have to stay overnight in Rochester, and called the cops, who rescued the kid unharmed.  Nice to see Big Government working well, even on the day that Congress chose to spend its first day reading the Constitution out loud and letting John Boner toss his big new gavel around.

After recording my opponent's nonappearance with the court reporter, I spent the rest of the day in Rochester; I puttered for most of the morning, visited two clients on the west side of town, served some papers near Lake Ontario (which, despite the overall sunniness of the rest of the day, looked bleak and snowy), got my Monday bounced-check issue resolved (yay!), and got home at a decent hour.... only to have go back out again in a few minutes.  More about that tomorrow. Or sometime.

Oh dear, these things seem to happen quite often in Elmira, if my mother and her obsessive police-blotter clippings are to be believed. Sad. I'm glad the kid is safe, though.

Here's hoping the sleazebag opposing party gets held in contempt. Three times? That's ridiculous.

Well, from everything else I remember, there's not much else to do in Elmira besides get food poisoning;P

(Sorry. Repressed memory of my sister's last, and I do mean last, visit to Pierce's 1894.)

I was gonna ask if you knew if they were still around. No need.

Interesting story about it. (http://www.antiquetrader.com/article/antiques_from_Pierce_1894_restaurant)

Oh dear. When was that, dare I ask?

(I grew up in the back of that restaurant, essentially. Learned to cook there and from my dad, and was part of the catering staff for...longer than was legal. Also, strolling violinist on occasion)

Late 80s, best as I can remember. I'm sure she'll remind me, since she tends to read these things.

So did you ever meet Emma or Gottfried?

We've had some experience in this regard. We bought both this home and the previous one from the recently deceased; the earlier one, directly from the estate, and word was that Mrs. Tucker had died in the house itself. For our four years there, we had more than the occasional opening and closing of kitchen cabinets, rattling of dishes and whatnot; she must've liked us, because we're pretty sure she moved here with us, thus explaining the occasional cry of "Stop it, Gertrude!" when we hear something untoward in the kitchen that a cat doesn't account for.
