Eleanor already posted about the first half of our disastrous Monday night here- trying a new and simpler (ha!) color for Emily's hair with a different set of chemicals than they'd previously been using, having Em faint from the fumes, then both of us trying desperately to keep her from totally passing out, concussing or worse while we showered all the offending chemicals off her. Once we'd ditched the hair products and gotten her back up and cleaned up, the other shoe dropped:

Dad, the Saran Wrap from around my hair went down the drain after you guys put me in the shower, and now the drain's plugged.

By this point, we'd finally eaten, and it was past 8 p.m. No problem, I thought. I'll just take the trap out downstairs and fish it out.

And God said, How long can you tread water?

I was so exhausted and still scared about the whole thing at that point, I neglected to plug the drain on the tub before undoing the trap. Within seconds, I was swimming against the onrushing flood from the tub above- which had filled to bath-like levels during her fairly long dye-removing shower. I ran upstairs to plug it and get a bucket, but by then a ton had already pooled at my feet. I ran our little (i.e., useless) snake up and sideways as far as I could get it, and got no wrap for my effort, but hoped I'd at least dislodged the dam, and put the trap back on.

Badly, as it turned out. I'd been so startled by the flood, I pretty much stripped one end of the thing, and it would no longer hold in position without major leaking. I came upstairs, soaked, angry and frustrated, and proceeded to make everyone else in the room feel exactly the same way. Ultimately, we all agreed to give it another shot in the morning, and by 8:30 this morning, I had two new traps from our beloved hardware store (the second so we'll always have an extra for when these things break late at night and/or on holiday weekends), the first of them securely installed, and,....

the tub's still plugged.

THIS time, I put in the plug and got the bucket first. When it started to drain, it became clear that way more of the drainage was coming from the street side of the trap than the tub end, meaning that the Saran Wrap had already migrated beyond my reach. And that, in turn, means that the plumber is once again going to be paying a visit here at Casa Disastre.

At least we'll get the whole damn thing snaked out real good so the tub won't drain as slowly as it does even when we're not all trying to kill ourselves.

Oh dear. Oh deary dear. These adventures always happen at the worst times...

But at least you have a spare trap now? *sigh*

Thank you for your kind words of concern. I would've commented similarly on the bad day you were having, but, you know, kinda busy here and all;)

I think that 5:06:07 08/09/10 business yesterday must've been messing with everybody's mojo. Today has already been an infinitely better day and it's not even lunchtime yet.

Oh lord! I'm laughing and I know how horrible the plumbing problems can be! >.< The plumber is probably going to stand there staring at you for a good while.

Never a dull moment at your house. Too bad, sounds like you could use a dull moment. :-)

Wish I could say the same...I found out this morning that it's been hot enough to do bad things to the old varnish on my dining set, and a magazine I left open on the table stuck to it. I got the paper off with some furniture polish, but that seems to have deglossed the table varnish. And things are sticking to the chairs, which have white spots forming. Argh.

Glad your day has seen an improvement over yesterday, though!

Thanks. After the past few days, I'm starting to wonder if I hit my own head on something and woke up in a bad dream in 2010.

That 7-pound can of Watneys is looking real good right about now.

I talked to you a while ago, but I wanted to post here too and say again that I'm glad y'all are all doing better and that no real harm was done. Also, I have begun thinking of you guys as family, and cannot fathom not getting to make the trip east next month. IT HAS TO HAPPEN.
