Most of Monday was Monstrous.  Beginning with an on-the-road court appearance at 9:30 in a hideous court building where they must turn the AC on sometime in the mid-afternoon to save energy. My opponent and I agreed on one thing: the court had screwed up the attempted adjournment of the case from late last month, and it took way too long, and extended chats with way too many people, to get it finally rescheduled for the end of the week.

Next, it was over to Bankruptcy Court for a bar exam question of a case. ("Don't mention Scarpino," said the trustee. "Scarpino makes me crazy." Scarpino is a controlling precedent named for an early 90s client of mine, who sought bankruptcy relief after I left my original Rochester firm, and wound up denying a routine form of relief to clients throughout New York, Connecticut and Vermont through a bizarre set of facts that could have been avoided if I'd represented him the whole time.)

After that, there would be a short delay. Rather, several of them: an office one (on account of papers, from the same case as the 9:30 clusterfudge, not having been assembled and sent on July 3rd as I'd believed them to have been); an accidental one (a nasty backup on a north-south interstate which I'd planned to take); and numerous construction ones (including several on other north-south highways, this being an odd year and therefore the one when NYSDOT effects repairs on all parallel roads within a 20-mile span; east-west roads will all be simultaneously ripped up next summer).

Despite having no fixed commitments out of town after about 10:30, I still managed to not get back to my own zip code until well past 4.  Blessedly, the mail at the home end included two small but nice bits of good work news that forgave most of the prior inconveniences. There followed cardio, novel reading, a range-fed chicken a la Eleanor, and the second of the BBC's longago history of our language called The Adventure of English.

Here's hoping for a more tuneful Tuesday.
