Honest! I didn't plan it this way!
Jun. 2nd, 2013 12:58 pmFor the past year and change, I've chaired the Hiring and Firing committee at church- reminding me once again why I'm about as organizationally impaired as they come. Within a month of taking office, I had to field major issues involving two existing staff members, one of whom wound up leaving, only to be replaced by a guy who literally lasted one day on the job; I had to deal with the downsizing of our ordained clergy and a splendid little war between a couple of factions involving somebody on the staff; and, without anybody exactly saying so to me directly, I was replaced as chair effective the first of next month and practically left to do just ceremonial stuff for the final few weeks of my term.
Ah, but ceremonial, I can do. And today's ceremony involved my only surefire hiring "win" in the entire year.
Corey came to us from a couple of other local Methodist congregations, and was hired part-time while she finished seminary in Rochester this past year. Sealing the deal for me back then was Googling a bit and seeing that she was a Doctor Who fan, even working it into one of her sermons. So we've always had that connection through the current year. When she finished seminary and was commissioned into a full-time gig down the road from here, we knew she'd be leaving us sometime this month, and I immediately knew what had to be done to honor her:
Of course I waited until the last week to order it. Most places I checked with about a TARDIS cake gave me either funny looks when I asked for one or, in the case of the most famous local cake decorator, proposed a minimum $1,500 "consultation fee for one of her creations. In the end, it was a dessert bakery just up the road that worked from a picture and got 'er done just in time.
And the recipient? Well, let the face tell it:

All of that was planned. Unplanned, though, was the unveiling coming the day after the BBC announced that Eleven will be regenerating out of the Doctor role himself after this year's two remaining episodes. Speculation is rampant about the successor. Will it be the first female Doctor? Will Ten pull a Grover Cleveland and return to the fold? Someone older? Someone unknown? Only Time Lords will tell....
